It’s almost mid-November. It’s unseasonably warm — mid 70s — and we had snow two weeks ago. Here’s where my head is at.I keep typing and deleting my thoughts here. I wrote a sentence about how out of whack things feel, and a probing question of when will they feel more normal again? Then I realized what is normal? My normal might not be your normal–so I deleted it. Then, since we’re in our Native People’s Study right now, I wrote about the heartbreaking history of the Indigenous People’s at the hands of U.S. government. Then I erased that because, well, it feels like there’s been enough bad news this year and maybe you’re coming here to click around for some Christmas decorations or some ideas for toys for your kids. Aren’t our chickens cute? We’re complex, this place is complex, and figuring out how to write when your mind is full and busy and people, close to you or not, have landed squarely and confidently on opposite sides of a particular spectrum is also complex. So where do we go from here? Oh, I think I should’ve stuck with Christmas decorations. But really, aren’t the chickens cute? And those are boys too.

Yes – both the chickens and the boys are very cute. Most of us are balancing the light and the heavy in our brains these days. Sometimes I’m thinking about what kind of tree topper I should purchase for our Christmas tree and sometimes I’m worrying if I’m doing enough to ensure my boys are anti-racist. It’s enough to make one’s brain explode and I am an incredibly privileged human being. All that to say, bring it all on. Because it’s “all” a part of life. I stick around (and click around) for the honesty and normal-ness you bring.
