This is not exactly a never-before-seen-or-done hack but here’s why I think the right booklist is a bit like a unicorn (and sharing a list that may, in fact, be one of those unicorns!)…
because… who’s the curator? Are they kind? Are they considerate? Are they thoughtful? Are they so far left or so far right that they’re quietly and inconspicuously trying to train up the next generation of soldiers to fight the “good” fight?! Please God, no! (Can you tell politics is heavy on the brain? P.S. First debate tonight!)
In a children’s book: give me cleverness (sometimes), give me kindness (always), give me beautiful illustrations (usually), and give me a good lesson (most of the time).
The curator, in this case, is Dolly Parton. And while I’m really not sure what your thoughts on the legendary Dolly are, here’s mine: she’s so loving and thus, so much of what she does follows suit. To my mind, her book list is a book list worth paying attention to. Add to that, I read The Rabbit Listened to the boys the other night (and again the next day) and practically burst into tears because it’s so wonderful. Charlie Mackesy-esque, full of tenderness. I think you will love it. Let’s all be more like the rabbit. Just read it.
Now excuse me while I click on over to my local library’s website to put on hold a whole bevy of books from her list.
Here’s her Imagination Library book list. Thank you to the reader who recommended this to me a few months ago. Do you remember who you are? If so, please leave a comment so I can give proper credit!
(And, my book list for the kids that I am continuously adding to! And, did you see I have a read highlight now? These sorts of small organizational tasks make me glad.)

Dolly’s books are so incredible. Our kids are signed up for her Imagination Library (which is so generous and lovely) and every single book has been a huge hit both for parents and kids alike. There hasn’t been a single dud! Highly recommend.

Oh I’m so glad to hear that. I just reserved a bunch more.. but being a part of the actual Imagination Library would be so fun.

My Big, Dumb, Invisible Dragon is a must read! It’s about grief- but even if kids aren’t currently grieving a loss- it’s just beautiful and so good at starting conversation, developing empathy, etc. You’ll love it 🙂

At the age of about 10 or 11, my boys did not want the bedtime reading (by me)any longer. However I was able to captivate them both with “The Phantom Tollbooth ” by Norton Juster. We still talk about this magical, amazing life affirming book to this day. I can’t recommend it enough. I have loved your blog for a few years Bridget. Thank you for the joys and advice and wisdoms you share.
