I’m always itching for a good weekend movie night with, hopefully, a movie that Steve and I will thoroughly enjoy too as opposed to one solely for the kids. Sometimes it feels like a big ask. So when we do find one that we’re all equally thrilled by, it feels like such a win. Here’s a few:
01. Secretariat: Parker declared it his “favorite movie ever” and even wrote an opinion piece on it for his schoolwork the next day. I think we’ll continue down this path by watching some of Secretariat’s actual races, and finding out why he was such a good racer (his heart was two and a half sizes bigger than an average horse’s!). Everything can be spun into a homeschooling activity these days, ain’t that the truth. Anyway, this one is up there with my favorite movies too, and certainly is my favorite horse movie (though I will forever love Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken). Streaming on Disney+
02. Sound of Music: I mean, it’s long and there are parts that may not keep the rapt attention of your five year old, but they really liked it and, come on, it’s Sound of Music! Streaming on Disney+
03. Karate Kid (the new one): It does have a little bit of violence, but the boys got pretty into this a few months back, and Steve and I love it too. Jackie Chan plays such a great character in it. Streaming on Prime for rental price
04. Parent Trap: honestly, either of them! Remakes are usually done sub par but I always loved the Lindsey Lohan version too — and this is after being a longtime fan of the Haley Mills version. Streaming on Disney+
05. How To Train Your Dragon 3: For a third in a series (and after really disliking the second), this trio redeemed itself. I loved this and especially the way it ended. Streaming on Hulu
Honorable mention: Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, Beauty and the Beast (original)
Two movies I’d like to watch but I’m holding off because they can be a little creepy: ET and Goonies.
{a few other family classics we love}
What family movies are you watching these days?
Aimee says
Our family has been reaching for funny movies these days because we all feel the need for laughter a little more intensely right now. Last week we watched Daddy Day Care, and I found it so much funnier than I remembered! I guess having kids of your own makes it all the more hysterical. The kiddos loved it too!
D says
Oh no tell em more on how to train your dragon 2 as we finished the first and mostly liked it! Can we just skip over 2 and not miss a thing?

The Dad dies in the 2nd one and it was just way too much for a kid’s movie, I thought. The 3rd definitely has quite the villain in it, but it ends in the way you’d want it to (for a kid’s movie!).
Steph says
We liked the 1st and 2nd but kiddo cried and cried after the 3rd movie because the thought of Toothless living apart from Hiccup was just too much. He never cries over movies either. 🤷🏼♀️

Ohhhh poor buddy!!!

Great list, thanks!
We watched E.T. a couple months ago with our 8-yr-old and he LOVED it (although he’s easily spooked out)! My husband and I really enjoyed watching it again. It’s aged so well.
We’ll def. check How To Train Your Dragon 3 (did not like the 2nd either).

I’ve never seen Secretariat before so I will have to put it on our to watch list. I am so glad you reminded me of Wild Hearts can’t be Broken. I loved that movie. I am now off to go and watch it on Disney+

Maleficent is so good. Amazing movies, great story line, beautiful images. My 5 and 7 year old loved them as much as my husband and I did. The second is on Disney+ now.

Togo (on Disney+) and the call of the wild (with Harrison Ford)! Both were among my favorites lately and both take place in Alaska. Great for kids!

We are OBSESSED with Togo. One of my favorite family movies in a long time actually.

We loved “Minescule, valley of the lost ants” on amazon prime. I recommend it to EVERYONE. I still love it after viewing 4 times… and it pleased all three boys ages 11, 9, and 5.

Haven’t even heard of it – thank you!
