There’s a few trees that are still changing, and I love the way they all sort of take turns. “I’m up. <<a week goes by and leaves are down>> Okay, I’m done. Now you go,” so as to stretch their fantastic show right into late November. Of course, it makes raking a month-plus long activity too, but even as I spent around three hours doing it last Saturday, I thought, “totally worth it.” And it is. Fall is just spectacular. How many times have I written that and how many more times will I? No telling.
Now here’s some things that are sifting through my head lately (not to be confused with a Notes for the Road post). In the spirit of more random blogging…
As much as I hate the thought of another subscription, I watched an ad for the new show with Jason Momoa and it made me want an Apple TV subscription. As I understand it (after asking William; he is the answer-man for all of one’s Apple questions), it’s $5 a month and it should be compatible with the Samsung TV we have. I looked for the app and didn’t find it though. But, because I’m committed to Jason Momoa, I will keep looking.
I just went to the gym this morning and lifted and I am going to try my best (I know better than to make a declarative statement!) to get there at least 2x a week this entire winter–plus, ideally, one barre class. I know, I KNOW, it will absolutely help with my mood and mental state throughout that long, dark season! I also would love to say I’m going to like order snow shoes or cross country skis and have an activity the whole winter long because it makes it so much more manageable, but I’m not sure I trust myself to use them enough for it not to have been a waste of money, you know?! Do any of you do either? (We have so many places in town where I could do both of those activities too! I’ll look into them second hand…)
Hello perfect dress. Imagine it with a classic black heel? And also imagine how soft it is! I think it’d look beautiful with a high bun, great hoops, and red lips for Christmas time too.
More hopes for myself (what, is this new year’s resolutions or something?!)… going to bed at 10:30 and up by 6. That would be perfect to my mind (or even up at 5:30). I’ve failed miserably at that this week… (but with good reason!)
I would love to get to NYC this season… like early December ideally. Can it be done on the cheap?! And include Radio City’s Christmas spectacular?!? I’m not sure NYC can ever be done on the cheap…
I’m making this tonight–or at least, something very close. Buying a loaf of sourdough from my favorite bakery to go with.
I finally returned a bunch of the cookbooks I got out at the library. I used this one so often while I had it, that I think it’s going to be one that I need to own.
Reflecting on this post that I wrote last year that still rings so true. My birthday is next week. I get reflective when I turn a year older, I think!
One thought for you busy people, those for whom the thought of an entire lengthy novel feels a bit daunting: a book of short stories. Beginning, middle, end, and you haven’t spent days and sleepless nights reading it. The book pictured above by Rick Bass is enjoyable. He’s a beautiful writer and each one will not take much more than 15 minutes, give or take. I’ve put this one on hold at the library and I do believe I will love it.
Grateful for each of you. Thank you for being here.

I’d love to visit NYC too! I’ve never been (I live halfway across the world in Hong Kong) and I would love to one day watch a Broadway show there, haha! 🙂

Do you have an REI, EMS or other outdoor sports store nearby? They often rent out gear! You could rent a few times to decide if it’s something you’ll really do and then buy used even! My kids love to get pulled in a sled while we ski (we use touring skis but cc skis or snowshoes could work too) or just run along side. It’s GREAT exercise for all of us.

We have a vacation home in central Oregon so one year I bought snowshoes from Costco for the whole family. They were really inexpensive and we have all used them a lot with no problems. If you have a Costco nearby, take a look.

I love winter and a big part of that is because I love to cross country ski. I used to downhill ski, but when I met my husband he turned me onto cross country skiing. It is a great workout and it’s a lot cheaper (around us there are groomed cross country ski trails we can use for free!). It’s also feels so good to come in from a long ski and sit in front of the wood stove to stretch then take a hot shower. I would highly recommend trying it out!

I would love to get into snow-shoeing/cross-country skiing! We have a ton of trails here in Lake County, IL, that make them ideal pursuits. You mentioned lifting; have you ever tried a CrossFit class? I am not understating it when I say that CrossFit has changed my life for the better in every way. I’ve learned to lift properly, and things I *never* thought I’d be able to learn (Power cleans! Overhead squats! Deadlifts! etc.). It has added great depth to my fitness and ability in other areas. If you have a box near you I highly recommend trying a class or week 🙂

I live in Buffalo, NY. So no stranger to long, cold winters here! I have 2 boys and we go alpine skiing. Every weekend we drive about 1 hour to the southern tier and it’s a great way for all of us to keep active and get out and enjoy the winter. We may as well make something of it. In NY state there is a program called I Ski NY for kids https://www.iskiny.com/ that offers 3rd and 4th grades a free ski pass to most NY State ski resorts. So that makes it more affordable. Also for gear, my husband has had a lot of luck finding used gear on ebay for the kids. We got them both new (to them) ski boots for this winter for around $30. I would check there for snow shoes or cross country skis.
