I saw this cake on Cup of Jo recently and made it and it really is so good and so easy. Will be making it many more times this season. It felt perfectly named too–the kind of thing that would be in a bakery in France. (Never been, but I feel like it’s true and that counts for everything right?). Anyway, what are you doing this weekend? We’re doing… yard work! And having a fire tonight. Looking forward to a cozy weekend (mostly) home.
Some weekend reading…
A Vietnam vet died with no known family, but people showed up.
UT making this kid’s day. I love this.
Currently reading this. (Remember my love for The Great Alone?)
SHOPBOP sale and this sweater is perfect. Also, this amazing coat is on sale too.
Creative Halloween costumes! There are some originals in this list. Do you have any good ideas for Steve and I?
I made these last night — first time this season (and certainly not the last). Make them and tag me!
Try this on your popcorn. Bonus: good for you.
Perfect fall scarf. Just can’t decide which color I like best.
If you only do one fall decoration–besides pumpkins anyway–do these. So simple and fun. We just put ours up last night. (Now Anders is asking, “Do we go trick or treating tomorrow?” Time is tricky for little ones.)
This is a beautiful print. And even more poignant given all that the family is going through.
Classic Halloween movies. We might watch Hocus Pocus tonight. Are my boys too young? I remember it freaking me out a little but I can’t recall what age I was!
This is a dreamy hotel.
Okay, Target. These are real cute for Halloween.
I am loving this skirt.
Today’s travels are taking us to… Jerusalem! (I’ve forgotten about this Airbnb thing I’ve done on Friday links in the past, but I’m getting back to it!). I don’t think Israel is on many people’s lists, but it should be. One of the coolest places I’ve ever been (old post throwbacks are always a little cringey–just look at that photo editing!)!
Have a great weekend!

I read the Nightingale right before the Great Alone this summer and it was soooo good. I had a good cry at the end!
bridget says
oh i can’t wait. which did you like better?!
Liz says
I love history and I think Nazi occupied France is often overlooked and over simplified so I thought it was a good look into the complexities of that situation. Overall, I think I loved the Nightingale just a bit better, BUT the Great Alone was just so good too. My mom just called me the other day after she got to “THAT PART” in the Great Alone (don’t want to spoil it for other readers) I had to give it to someone after I read it! Am I alone in the fact I prefer hard copy books to kindle readers?
bridget says
You are not alone! i must have a book in my hands. (also—i think in the whole monkey see monkey do thing, kids need to see us actually reading a book—kindle just isn’t the same!)

My daughters are 9, 7, and 5 and watch Hocus Pocus without being scared. But, the lava monster on Moana didn’t frighten them. She startled me, so maybe my kids are cyborgs.

lol!

Loveeee that apple cake. I discovered it two falls ago when I found myself inundated with apples. I swap the egg for ground flax and it’s easily made vegan. So so good!!!
bridget says
I love how pretty it is and not sweet it is!
Heather says
I made the apple cake this weekend and it is delicious! Thank you for the recommendation.
bridget says
yay!! and it’s so beautiful too, isn’t it?!
Heather says
It is! So beautiful. It is going to be my new fall ‘impress all the friends’ dessert.

Maybe not for the kiddos but my favorite Halloween movie is “Young Frankenstein.” My grocery list is getting way too long. Your irresistible photography has moved the Ginger Snaps and apple cake ingredients ahead of breakfast, lunch and dinner. THANK YOU!
