Perhaps I’d reach a point where I would eventually throw my hands up and declare a fervent need for me time but, as our days are now, I feel as though I could live in them forever. Live in this togetherness, the boys just as they are, no more growing, more more changing, no more school, life at a total standstill, forever. I love summer. And I love summer most with little boys.
Now that we are home from the lake, really settling into the magic summer that goes down in this beautiful coastal town in which we live, I’m feeling the need to do everything, while also feeling the need to fight that feeling. To check our “summer bucket list” twice, and to ignore it completely. Will October 1st hit and I’ll find myself living in regret that they never had a proper lemonade stand? We are happily marching to the beat of a perfect New England summer right now. It’s such a good beat. It’s hot, some days creeping into the mid-90s recently, and I’m sure to follow up any observation of the temperature with, “I’m not complaining!” (My mid-February observations are not merely observations. Those, we could certainly classify, as complaining.)This week in our town is full of festivities. And I mean full. It’s called Yankee Homecoming and every day there’s something going on from sidewalk sales and food trucks to waterfront concerts and parades. Some locals grumble about the crowds, but I love it. We have nearly 24-7 access to a Kona shaved ice truck, and a blank slate with which to fill every morning when we wake up. It feels like small town living at its very finest. Like a cartoon depiction, everyone walking around with a smile on their face, greeting their neighbor, throwing their money at the fried clams vendor, and falling into bed each night covered in something sticky and sweet. We ride our bikes or scooters more often than we drive this week to avoid the parking hassle. After showers last night I told the boys to get in the car! “In our pajamas? Do we need shoes!” “Yes, and no!” We got some shaved ice, and listened to a bit of the waterfront concert before a heavy sleep. It was the best.
