We are in our happy place right now–Lake Winnipesaukee, that is. The last 24 hours have been rainy (kind of a welcome respite from the sun and heat!) and we watched The Patriot last night. I had forgotten how good that movie is. And how handsome Heath Ledger was. What are you doing this weekend?
Some weekend reading…
You know you’re hitting your prime when you’re thinking more about sun coverage than about getting tan. This is the greatest suit. Give me all the sun coverage. Especially because I’m fairly certain I have a slight allergy to sun. If I spend too much time in it, my neck gets really itchy for like three days. Anyone else experience this?! (Question for those of you who have one like this: do you like it? Do you feel hot sitting on a beach all day in it? I’m really thinking about it…)
I am definitely adding this skillet dinner to a meal plan soon.
The Great-American Rail Trail. This is the kind of news that warms my heart and makes me think that all is not lost. How can we help get it completed quicker?
How sweet is this little Brooklyn studio? I’m itching to get back to NYC for a weekend!
We just completed this puzzle while up at the lake and it was really fun. Only stoked my national park roadtrip dreams! I think this one would be so fun next.
This is probably Parker’s favorite movie to watch right now. Suspense and action without being very scary for a 7 year old.
My grandmother used to make the greatest baked goods. A peach cobbler with warm vanilla pudding drizzled on top was her signature. I’m going to try this.
I like this “when you brush” chore chart idea. I am trying to implement chores more into our daily lives but it’s hard (and harder still when you get pushback from said kids…). It’s important though!
I kind of want this for our back deck. I imagine spending hours in it reading the day away (in my next life, of course).
I’ve held this in my hand like three times at Target in the last few months but chicken out every time. I’m such a wuss. What if if makes my hair turn orange in the sun?! Most of the reviews are great ones, but the few scary ones keep me doubting… I think I’ll try it come fall. For real (maybe).
I like Janet Lansbury’s take on parenting (one of the few parenting books I’ve really enjoyed was by her).
Along with these Birkenstocks, this is probably the product I’ve shared more about than anything, but it’s because it’s a forever favorite. Five? Seven? years later, I still think so.
Steve has recently discovered professional YouTubers, and I’ve caught him watching a few of these La Vagabonde videos. I told him it could be us if only… he quit his job and was happier to be on camera more often. Easy as that, right?
Have a happy weekend, friends!

I think I have that sun allergy too! If I haven’t been in the sun in a while and have more intense exposure, I get a very slight rash on my chest and sometimes arms/legs. I haven’t quite figured it out, but it’s annoying and itchy, too! But if I ease into the sun and my Vit D levels are good, I don’t seem to have it as much. Curious what other people say!
Meanwhile, loving the photos of the lake–looks dreamy.
AND, come visit Brooklyn!

Love these posts! On the chore front we’ve found success with the Bucket System by Rachel Rainbolt (sounds so official, it’s really quite simple). Gives a little bit of structure but also empowers the kids to have autonomy & ownership over their contribution to the family and eliminates the need to remind or nag. I’m such a fan! Plus you might enjoy Rachel’s vibe 😉 She has a class I think, but she describes pretty much everything you need to know here. http://www.sageparenting.com/soft-structure/

Yes! I actually get little bumps from the sun if I’m out too long, ugh. I have a long-sleeved rashguard that I put over my suit and I love it. If you get it wet, it actually will keep you cooler than wearing just a swimsuit (at least in my experience). The fabric doesn’t seem to dry as quickly as the water on my skin – likely why it makes me feel cooler. In Arizona, I have to cover up!! Plus, it makes me look like a cool surfer even though I’ve never surfed a day in my life. 😉

I have the same sun allergy. Too much time in the sun, and I get an itchy rash on my neck/collarbone and arms. My dermatologist said some sunblocks can make it worse, so you may want to try switching your sunscreens. I seem to react no matter what I use, so I have leaned hard into rash guards and other protective clothing when we’re at the beach. Totally agree with Renee – in addition to the protection factor, I feel like the rash guards keep me much cooler in the heat.
Personal preference: I like the rash guard shirts rather than the one piece bathing suit styles. Trying to use the bathroom in a long-sleeved one piece is a pain. It’s like trying to peel a banana from inside the banana 😀

I love that analogy. So funny. And thank you for the answer! I guess this really is a thing!
