Before we even get started, let’s pretend we don’t see the miscellany underneath the couch, ok? Ok! So, as you all know, we moved into a new house almost 4 years ago now. We moved here with the same Pottery Barn couch that we bought together when we were married. Six kids and two dogs later, it had seen its day. It was white and while you may think that’s brave of me, it was slipcovered and actually pretty easy to maintain (if you’re willing to remove the slipcovers, treat stains, wash, dry, and put them back on, anyway!). But even so, we needed a new sofa. We needed something bigger, too. Having seen Interior Define couches tagged in various IGs, I knew the couches were gorgeous. But the real clincher was that they were so customizable. Like I’m talking you can add two inches here, two inches there. We needed a very specific and odd sized sofa for our room, so this was the perfect solution. So many different swatch options (from kid-friendly durable ones, to more delicate ones), different leg options, so on and so forth. Not to mention it is so comfortable. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said, especially with the ottoman, “I feel like there’s a bed in my living room.” And I mean that in the best way possible. It’s inviting and cozy and very easy (too easy) to take a nap in. Durable too. As in, when the kids go bouncing, I don’t feel like it’s going to buckle under the chaos. She’s sturdy! Plus, we can all fit on it. Movie nights made easy! Now my living room isn’t complete yet. Opposite this sofa is the wall where our TV hands and where I still need to get frames up. I’m dragging my feet to do it because you do know how difficult a frame wall is for me, let alone choosing which pictures to frame of the 30,000+ pictures I have?!? Nevertheless, when that’s done, I’ll do a post including the whole room. As you know, we downsized when we moved, so this living room is very much the biggest chunk of the whole first floor. Behind me is the kitchen table, and behind that is the kitchen. And, that’s really it!
SOURCES: Couch: Sloan from Interior Define (this isn’t technically sponsored, but they did give me a generous discount!) in the monochromatic plush in ecru color; pillows: Sew and Cloth and Modern Clementine; planter: Norwegian Wood
Things still to do:
- a new rug; I feel like I need something patterned here? Though I do love the comfort level of the one I have there now, it’s just so much grey. It came from our last house, but I don’t think it works here. Thoughts?
- Between those two front windows… a piece of art? Something?
- Maybe another planter with that one back there. Still undecided (in part b/c the one there is pretty substantial–you can’t quite see it, but there’s a brass ring around the plant with a pretty large circumference so it sort of takes up the whole corner space.)
- Some window treatments of some kind. I think just a roman shade of some sort–as opposed to a floor length curtain.

I love the living room already, even though it’s not ready! It’s coming along great. 🙂

You need an old oil painting between those windows. There’s nothing like an original painting to add character to a room plus they’re so interesting to study. Of course I might have an oil painting, water color, or whatever problem. Old, new, whatever I love them. I found my first in a flea market in the local town before I was married. It fueled an addiction ha ha.

Four years already?! That speaks to the passage of time for both of us. I used to read your blog at work in slower moments, during that time, which I’m doing now for the first time since then. Love your couch. Want your couch. Inspired that you downsized (we all need less space probably, right?). And the bookshelves to the ceiling? Amazing.

Bamboo roman shades would be pretty – add some warmth with their wooden tones and you can adjust the length yourself to get a really custom look. RugsUSA.com always has great sales on rugs (especially around holidays) so you can get a large rug for decent price! They’re my go-to for every rug so far – I think I’m on my 9th rug after various apartments and rooms and nurseries to decorate!

Pop a staghorn fern wall mount between those two windows. Or maybe a beautiful rope basket? My family is due for a new couch – everyone has grown since we bought our ikea one and movie nights start with alot of bickering while we claim space. I kind of hate curtains and shades but if I have to – bamboo or wooden is always nice- or maybe a subtle patterned fabric roman shade. Love your book cases btw.

Hi there – looking at buying the asher sofa from interior define and deciding between the ecru monochromatic plush and their ash performance felt. Just wondering how the ecru plush fabric is holding up a year in. I’m a little concerned about how light of a colour it is/that it will get dirty from daily use? Also is the fabric itself comfortable? Thanks so much!

Love it1 . Tell me about your bookshelves — were they built in? Do they stop at sofa level? I’d love to do something similar. . . .

they were built in — and they go all the way to the floor! we love them.

Love your couch! I just ordered a Sloan but can’t decide on a fabric. How is the light color holding up to kids? I have the same issue with kids and dogs and a bit scared to commit to a light color.

some light staining, but pretty forgiving (and can be cleaned!)
