Making: last night I chopped up brussels sprouts really fine and sautéed them with butter and salt and they were like as good as french fries to me. yes, I said it! I kept going on and on about them and Parker finally tried them and, with a smirk on his face, admitted they were delicious.
Drinking: coffee? water? wine? I’m so boring in this category. I don’t stray much from my old stand-bys.
Reading: a reader recommended Julia Child’s My Life in France; enjoying it so much. It’s perfect for moody fall weather. (thank you for any of your reccs in the comments; I’ve found so many things I love through the comment section of my blog!)
Wanting: this stunning wrap coat — in every color.
Listening: a new(er) Paul Simon: Cool Papa Bell. it’s so fun. virtually nothing brings me back to my childhood faster than his voice. he makes me immediately want to transport myself to sea isle with all my cousins and doing the electric slide to You Can Call Me Al.
Playing: chase/hide-and-go-seek with the boys; I do this creepy voice and chase them and they live for it (even if they’re totally freaked out at the same time)
Wishing: this winter is dotted with warm days here and there; I can handle it then!
Loving: Giada’s lentil soup; so easy and delicious and you don’t have to start it hours in advance.
Watching: The Crown; episode 2 and we’re really liking it. This sort of show is right up Steve’s alley too. the actress that plays Elizabeth is sooo good.

Isn’t the Crown so good? The actors are great and its such a breath of fresh air compared to all the guts & gore of so many other shows! (game of thrones/walking dead, etc. Although I still do watch the others :/

i have the same feelings as you! (felt the same way about downton–like cleansed my mind of all the other filth… that i definitely do watch.)

I loooove the Crown too. I’m like 7 episodes in and their portrayal of Queen Elizabeth’s marriage is fascinating – it had to be so hard to be married, like really married, in a job like that! Plus I love Matt Smith as Duke of Windsor (he’s one of my all-time favorite actors).

this is my first time seeing him in anything. he’s great!

There’s just something about the gathering cold that inspires reading about food, right? You’ve probably already read Ruth Reichl’s “Tender to the Bone” but if not, I think you’d enjoy it. I couldn’t agree more about Brussels sprouts. For another completely different taste, chop the same way and sauté in olive oil instead of butter and maybe throw in a little chopped garlic and a sprinkle of crushed red pepper. When they’re just about done, splash in some fish sauce. And lastly, a memory of Paul Simon…when my boys were growing up we typically had cleaning parties every Friday night. We blasted Rhythm of the Saints and in an hour got the house relatively sparkling. Then we’d eat pizza and play board games. My grown sons have laughed and commented many times that whenever they hear a song from that album they feel like picking up a broom or a mop!

That is such a good Paul simon memory. Obvious child is one of my favorite songs of all time!!!!

How fine did you chop the brussel sprouts? Do you happen to take a picture? Do you remember how long you cooked them? Just looking for new ways to cook vegetables!

Paul Simon is the soundtrack to so many wonderful family memories of mine growing up…One group that I have been enjoying lately in a similar style that stirs up those same happy feelings is a group called Hot Water. Have you heard of them? The songs Naive, Wamkelekile and Lekker Sakkie are some of my absolute favorites that I can listen to on repeat. And they’ve become the soundtrack to some of our friday night dance parties in our house… happily renewing family tradition.
