The other day I saw him sitting on the floor of their room, trying calmly to get his legs through Parker’s underwear over his pajamas. The allure of the underwear is two-fold: (1) Thomas is on it and (2) it’s big-boy. I sat down to help him and he was grateful. The leg through each hole was a challenge. I immediately brought him to the mirror in the bathroom so he could see Thomas on the butt. He was so excited. He kept it that way overnight and well into the next morning.
He’s so cute that it actually hurts.
I made this pumpkin bread the other day, and I must say it replaces my old standby. The times when it doesn’t: when you need two loaves–one to keep and one to keep (I meant to say one to keep and one to share) because then that other recipe is perfect. This one, however, is heavy and dense and practically billowing over the top. It’s tempted to spill right over its sides but then it doesn’t, it just keeps rising and developing that perfect crack at the top that makes me think I’m Julia Childs when I achieve. It takes a whole can of pumpkin, and is a touch less spicy than the other in that nutmeg-clovey way.The leaves began their slow flicker to full flame a few weeks ago but the past few days they’ve really taken off. As I drive around, especially in the mornings when the sun is really shining, they demand your attention. I wish I could say I am leaping into fall with open arms, but honestly there’s a slight feeling of foreboding about it. Like this very sidewalk I’m cruising happily along on entirely unobstructed? How much snow will it be covered in in a few months’ time? How long till I see that beautiful brick again? How many days, end to end, in under 30 degrees? The Farmer’s Almanac predicts a cold winter. You know what I say to the Farmer’s Almanac? (It’s not appropriate to write.)

Oh this post is making me miss Fall. We just moved to Southern California and yes, it’s amazing but feeling alittle homesick. I’ve lived on the East Coast all my years – major adjustment. I might just have to make that Pumpkin Bread to Autumn it up out here!

Good news… the Farmer’s Almanac is not very accurate, so there’s still hope for a nice, mild winter. 🙂 http://news.psu.edu/story/141165/2007/09/24/research/probing-question-farmers-almanac-accurate
bridget says
take THAT farmer’s almanac.
