one. steve was away last week for about 4 days. on day 3, parker was walking around holding our family christmas card from last year. i looked down at him and saw tears on his cheeks. “what is it buddy?!” he looks up and just says, “dad.” they have the most precious relationship. he always wants to be sitting on or near steve, they cuddle every morning, they read stories together every night. that boy loves his dad.
two. i watched the first episode of this is us the other day after someone on facebook suggested it might fill the parenthood void that like 90% of us still have deep inside our souls. (do you? i do. and on that note, FNL is close behind.) so far, so good. and it closed with a song that i cannot stop listening to. please go listen to it right now. “watch me” by labi siffre. it’s the sort of song that makes me sit back and take stock of my life and my many blessings and feel it all. you feel me?
three. mums! i have yellow ones outside, and a white one on my counter, and i love them. i also love how hardy they are for this brown thumb. plants that i have to really try to kill?! sign me up.
four. a tomato sauce that literally requires 4 ingredients of me. 4 ingredients. i made marcella hazan’s tomato sauce last week and i know i sound really hoity-toity when i throw around this beautiful, foreign name like marcella hazan followed by tomato sauce as though she called me up and shared the recipe with me herself. in truth: i am neither hoity-toity nor am i friends with marcella hazan–though, since she came up with a tomato sauce that takes 4 ingredients, i’d sort of like to be. (marcella? call me?) i found it when one of my dear readers commented about it on this post. said reader also called themย “tinned tomatoes” instead of canned which sounds way lovelier rolling off the tongue. all in all, it was a positive discovery. one mistake. i made ina’s meatballs with it and then finished their cooking process in the sauce so i feel like i didn’t really get the truest read on the sauce but what i could tell was that it had a good flavor (hello! butter!) and that i will absolutely be trying it again (but doubling. i think it was still a little scant for 1 pound of pasta though it claims to be enough.). enough about sauce!
five. this perfect fall scarf. i’m something of a scarf-collector, maybe even hoarder. i don’t collect many things (though me and a friend collected covergirl ads when we were in middle school. i thought of it recently when i saw nikki taylor in an ad in real simple. she was one of my favorite cover girls at the time. well this is one random side note.) anyway, that is really a perfect one in length/thickness/color. do i need yet another?!

I watched the first episode of This is Us and it was OK, but so far I’m not thinking that it even comes close to Parenthood. Some of the storylines felt too contrived. It felt like they wanted the Manny guy to come across as appearing shallow but actually being a deep guy. Instead, I found him to appear shallow and also BE shallow. And… SPOILER ALERT… I was annoyed by the triplet story… giving birth vaginally to triplets is pretty much unheard of! And it’s not like hospitals keep extra babies around for people who lose a baby in childbirth. In reality, no adoption agency would even consider letting a couple who just lost a baby and has two newborns of their own to deal with take another baby home from the hospital. I just felt like that whole storyline was too contrived and simplistic. We’ll see how the next episode goes Maybe it will get better??

i actually had all the same thoughts! but then i cut it slack when i learned the twist (so maaayabe thirty/forty years ago they would’ve attempted a vaginal triplet delivery?? among other things? i’m not sure.)
Rachel says
I feel so stupid because I TOTALLY missed the twist. I thought the twist was that they adopted the third baby. I was watching the second episode and I was like, “Why is it 8 years later for Mandy and Milo but it’s still the same day for everyone else??? And WHY does everything look so retro?” I actually had to google it before I understood what was going on. Ha ha. So now everything makes much more sense. It’s still not on Parenthood’s level for me, but I’m liking it a little more now that I get it. Ha ha.

on #2: what is the show? did you leave the name out or am I just missing it?!
bridget says
it’s “this is us!”
emily fear says
TY! Yes, I totally missed that!

I think the show has potential to fill the Parenthood void. I don’t love the Manny or sister characters but I do like the Mom and Dad storyline and am looking forward to see it play out. I also really like Mandy Moore in this show (talk about middle school) I think she fits the role.
On another note: No such thing as too many scarves!
Anna says
ohhh, that was me with the tinned tomatoes! i’m so glad you tried it! somehow i’ve never made ina’s meatballs but adding them to the list of meals to try. i love mandy moore – she seems so normal and genuine and kind. i need to get up to speed with this is us. and yes, you always need another scarf!

I loved the first episode of This Is Us! I definitely didn’t predict that ending! Can’t wait for this week’s episode.

Hi Bridget, I have been enjoying reading your blog for the last few months! (And of course poking around the archives! We have a few things in common…) You have a beautiful family ๐
I use a Marcella Hazen recipe for my bolognese sauce, which is a big hit around here and is a great sauce to have simmering on the stove all day long. http://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1015181-marcella-hazans-bolognese-sauce
Also, if you’d like to have friendship with Marcella you will have to do it long-distance as she passed away a few years ago after a very long life ๐ Luckily she leaves behind many great recipes and cookbooks for us all to enjoy!
(Seriously, though, try the bolognese sauce. You will love it, I promise!)

ha! very long distance. serves me right for not doing my research on marcella!
THANK you for that bolognese sauce link!
