I want to have a running list of movies, those go-to movies, for the nights when you plop on the sofa and stare at each other dumbfounded: what should we do tonight? Our (short) list is… short. Or, it’s especially short when I am finally sitting down to think of what to watch. Remember the days of ambling up and down the aisles of Blockbuster (or, in my case, Wow! Video–yes, it had an exclamation point, and you also got a small bag of movie theatre popcorn on the way out so the exclamation point was well deserved.)? You didn’t need to actually think about what movie you wanted to watch. Who wants to have to think?! Just browse. And then if you came upon the chosen one and it had some copies left, stacked behind the image that first grabbed you, there was that night’s movie! (What a sad day it was to choose one and have there be no copies left. Do I have any readers who don’t know the age of non-digital movies? Of… not being able to push a button and download one? Who haven’t heard of Blockbuster? And, while I’m asking, do I have any readers playing Pokemon Go? Please stop that right now.)
Since I’m asking, I might as well share some of ours. Even though this requires thinking, I’m feeling generous tonight. Shawshank Redemption, duh. Ooh! Count of Monte Cristo! Have you seen that? If you haven’t, please get it. You know what a newer addition is for us? The Hundred Foot Journey. You won’t not like it. It’s Complicated! If for nothing else than the beautiful homes (but I love more than that). The Holiday is a definite Hunt favorite, though we tend to reserve it for Christmas time. Titanic (woah, really Bridge?). I guess with Titanic, I just know that if we’re clicking around through the channels and we come upon it, we’re going to watch it for some length of time. Maybe not the whole thing, but maybe the whole thing. It’s just one of those movies. Steve just said Vicky Cristina Barcelona. I wouldn’t have necessarily put it on the list but, you know, he’s right. It’s great. We Bought a Zoo–and enjoy that music because it’s wonderful. In fact, go turn on the soundtrack right now. Steve just chimed in, “any of the Bourne movies!” Then he added It’s a Wonderful Life which is awfully cute of him, but wouldn’t be on my list. Like Mary, he’ll love George Bailey till the day he dies. Italian Job! I think Italian Job is one of the best action movies. Comedies? Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Bridesmaids (story: I watched this in the theatre when I was like 39 weeks pregnant with Parker and laughed hysterically the entire movie. My belly shook like Santa Claus. It was ridiculous.). Steve’s on a roll now so I’m just going to write everything coming out of his mouth if these fingers can keep up: Aviator, Patriot Games, Gladiator, Knight and Day, Illusionist, Blood Diamond. Just note that I am not in total agreement with all of those. By the way, what’s your favorite movie anyway?
Side note: these are the most fabulous pants. High waisted, thick (but in a good way) fabric. I feel like they’ve got a little Audrey Hepburn thing going on, you feel me?

Have you seen The Way Way Back? BEST Summer Movie EVER and teen friendly too! Great, touching, coming of age story and at the same time captures everything familiar about the ins and outs being a kid in the summer!!!!

Also if you want to get hooked on a series fast catch up on Season 1 and Season 2 of Transparent on Amazon Prime TV- it is addictive and the new season starts this fall!

I haven’t seen it!
I have a friend who loves Transparent — I’ll add it to the list!
Julie says
I second the Way Way Back! Also, Kings of Summer.

Sheena says
A new favourite of mine is Kingsman! (Colin Firth and Taron Egerton. It’s awesome.)
(And hello! Love your blog! I’m a first-time commenter.)
bridget says
I’ve never seen it and we’re big Colin Firth fans! On it.
Licia says
Yes, feel you – and this whole combination looks absolutely stunning on you.
Catch me if you can, The Notebook, Leap Year, Inception, King’s Speech, Chef, Chéri, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Love Actually might be on our list though for the last years movie night slowly turned into “series – night” – but the Hundred Foot Journey sounds great.
bridget says
Catch Me if you Can! That should’ve been on my list. I love that movie.
I’ve never seen Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, but I’ve wanted to forever. Going to soon!

I second The Way Way Back and Best Exotic Marigold Hotel! My husband and I love Crazy, Stupid, Love. It’s not as action packed or suspenseful as your movie list, but everyone seems to enjoy it. I also like Something’s Gotta Give (in the same category as It’s Complicated), Begin Again (which has also has a great soundtrack), and St. Vincent (because, Bill Murray). Happy movie watching and thanks for sharing you list!
bridget says
love Crazy Stupid Love!! The Dirty Dancing scene with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone is so good.
Lauren says
You’ve got to watch ‘Four Christmases’ with Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn. Now. it’s a year round Christmas movie. Hysterical.

I guess we all need to watch the way way back, apparently. My husband and I have totally different favorite films, so it’s been fun introducing each other to new stuff through the years- he loves Eddie Murphy stuff from the 80s (Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America are favorites) and I just introduced him to my cousin vinny (apparently we’re on an 80s kick?) Our titanic is definitely LOTR- 110% our favorite, and we both know it so well we can pick it up for 20 minutes or 2 hours, depending on the mood.
Emily says
We constantly talk about missing blockbuster. I get that Netflix and redbox is more convenient but blockbuster was just an experience! I miss it terribly.
jennifer says
My favorite is Life Is Beautiful
bridget says
