we’ve been home for three months now. which is, give or take a few days, the same length of time we were gone. steve and i cannot fully grasp this. how can it be? to us, it felt like we were gone for such a long time. we remarked, so often, how funny time felt while we were there. (i wrote a little about it here.) it bears repeating. it really was so strange. time moved altogether differently while we were there. and now that we’ve been home the same time we were gone, we’re being reminded of this strange phenomenon again. through it all, i keep wondering, what does this mean about the pace of our life here?
i haven’t done anything by way of an album or framing, so grabbing them for this post is probably the most time i’ve spent looking at our pictures aside from showing them to some friends. it’s hard to capture the feelings they conjure. it’s a mix of disbelief, wonder, nostalgia, wishing, sadness, happiness, a decent dose of what were we thinking. the kids were smaller, younger, haircuts were different, anders had more chub and wasn’t even crawling when we left. it was home for three months and i miss it.

May I suggest, perhaps time felt so long and deliberate while you were away because every day was a new experience bringing with it a new set of emotions, challenges and rewards, forcing you to take note of it all. Time feels so elusive at home because we lose ourselves in the monotony of the comfort of it all. Comfort brings consistency and ease and thus, we lose sight of the details. I totally agree, it is absolutely a funny trade-off.
With that, your pictures are just lovely.

Yes, I agree with all of this. Psychologists say that time seems to slow down if we're having a lot of "first time experiences" (or in this case, experiences that are different from our norm!) and I totally agree with this…. being taken out of your daily routine, will make time perception a weird thing.

I was away in Europe for two months this past summer and I completely get what you mean about time feeling different while you're abroad. The time felt longer, but now in hindsight feels more fleeting. It still seems like we only got home a month ago, yet sometimes it also feels like the trip happened years ago. Many memories still remain vivid as ever, though the edges and details of those memories are fading quickly. So bizarre!

We're just a few months away from moving cities- same country just moving from the crazy business driven city we've both spent most of our lives in to a coastal city and I know exactly what you mean about time because I keep thinking I can't wait to move so our life can slow down and I can take in more and enjoy more… I mean time itself doesn't change but our little family of 3 in that city that will be our home soon is a slower moving, coffee sipping, park visiting, sand castle building family.. Where now we work, and work, and work and sometimes have time for a relaxed lunch and coffee. I know you don't mean to say your life where you are isn't as good as the one in Italy its just that when you're trying to experience the place you live you're more aware of the time you spend, sometimes it feels like routine for ease is the biggest eater of memorable time.. I don't know sort of makes sense?
