When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

Awww, I'm so sorry! I lost a puppy that was only a year old once, and I still remember him often. *My* first puppy – I loved him so much!!

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this! Parker's question made me tear up. I can't imagine losing my dog (I'm constantly trying to remind myself of the inevitable as if that will make it seem more acceptable when it happens…ugh). Dogs should have longer lifespans as it is but I'm especially sorry that you lost your Gracie so quickly and too too soon.

I'm so sorry for your loss so early on. My heart breaks for you and your family and I hope your heart heals with time.

Oh, I am so sorry! Losing a pet, especially prematurely is such a difficult thing. I still get choked up thinking of saying goodbye to our beloved bulldog when he was just five. Hoping the void is filled and that the pain won't be too much for you!

I'm sorry for your loss. Pets are such a wonderful part of your life and you don't realize their full impact until you're without them! My mom is a veterinarian and has always loved recommending "Dog Heaven" by Cynthia Rylant to help children think of their dogs in a safe/happy place. (She wrote a "Cat Heaven" as well!)

I'm so sad for all of you! I am sure that you have now gotten a ton of book recommendations for Parker, but this is one that I recommend: http://www.amazon.com/Loved-Flowers-Annie-Stoneleigh-Press/dp/0978917405

Ugh. I saw the picture and title post and I didn't want to click. So sorry for your loss. Pets really should live forever, you know?

This breaks my heart and I am so sorry. I have worked as a vet tech for 8 years and it's never easy when a pet gets sick. She will be very missed and knew how much how much she was loved by your family.

So sorry for all of you on the loss of your family member. We lost our dog, Opie, three years ago also far too early and without much notice. He had only been feeling unwell for a week or so and after a vets visit we still weren't aware that he was as sick as he was. His last day with us was the only one we knew that we were going to lose him. I feel fortunate he went on his own terms but it was a horrible day and the grieving period was difficult. You don't realize how much you talk to a dog or just feel good having them beside you until they aren't there anymore. We made a photobook of our dear Opie's life with the blogpost my daughter wrote in it as well. It's theraputic to look through it every so often (i'm doing so right now). A quote that I found helpful: "The misery of keeping a dog is his dying so soon. But, to be sure, if he lived for fifty years and then died, what would become of me?" Walter Scott
Sarah M says
Gosh, I feel your heartbreak. We lost our dog, Jack Sparrow, last November. He was only 8 years old. My son had grown up with him, and he was very much a part of our family. The grief was very real. (And still is, some days.) Similarly, he became ill suddenly and unexpectedly. We had him cremated, ultimately scattering his ashes at his favorite beach, and that poem was inclosed with his remains. Keep your chin up. After a bit the sadness fades, and what's left is the good stuff: the memories and the love.

I shouldn't have read this. I'm so sorry for your loss. My first dog iss actually my husband's dog before we met and I know I will need some serious therapy when she dies. I've told her it isn't allowed to happen. She's very obedient, so I feel good about the request.
