my mind is crazy-busy right now as we figure out this italy trip. i know it’ll be so great, but i’m also a realist (steve would say i’m too much of a realist). i want to prepare myself for every possible unforeseen occurrence. baby has an ear infection?! on it. lindsey has a blister? i’ve got a bandaid for that! we’re renting a car? here are the car seats!! (like mary poppins. they sort of just appear from my very small bag.) i know a lot of these things can be purchased there but in my (crazy) head i want to have the whole kit and caboodle with me whether or not there’s a store nearby.
and clothes. of course i’m trying to figure out clothes to bring too. the weather will be changing a bit while we’re there, we’re not staying in the same place the whole time. i want to pack light (can you imagine rushed train exchanges?! a traveling CIRCUS, that’s what.), but i also don’t want to wear the same five outfits over and over.
these are real problems. help me, i’m poor. (name the movie.)

Thought I posted, so if this is a duplicate, eeek, sorry. But: pack super light and buy clothes/accessories there! a) affordable places like zara, H&M, United Colors of Benetton, etc are everywhere in Italy and carry baby through adult sizes, b) the euro/usd exchange rate is pretty close to even right now, c) this way you can buy what works for the climate/style, and d) whatever doesn't fit in your Mary Poppins bag at the end can be shipped home to the states (this is how I survived 2 study abroad stints in Italy!). Also, bonus, the kids will feel super cool saying "oh this? I bought it in Italy" (nevermind that the US versions of these stores sell a lot of the same stuff)!

thank you jenny! this is very helpful. and yes, we love the exchange rate right now!!!

Hi Bridget!
I'm from Italy, exactly 20 min by train to Venice, so If you need any advice for visiting Venice or the cities near it I'm glad to help you! and by coincidence my sister in law is an official guide for Venice (polish and german, but she speaks english too) and if your planning to take a guided tour of the town I'm sure I (and she) can help you and your family!
My fiance used to works in some of the best venician restaurants (not the fancy, tourist and expensive one, the one where the venician goes to eat), so I can help even with that!!
Good luck for planning your trip!
Paola

Pack a capsule collection (un-fancy.com) and accessorize with all the goodies you find on the road!

I always pack a capsule collection because traveling light make you travels so much more enjoyable. Pinterest has tons of examples of capsule packing.

I'm getting ready to pack for a 7-week stint in Colorado. The weather is a bit variable there this time of year too (cool, warm, or hot days and cool or warm nights). A couple years ago we were in Australia for a similar amount of time and I packed enough clothes for about 14 days, which was perfect, though I packed too many colors and was sick of them by the end. Make sure you bring colors that coordinate, and essentials like a foldable rain jacket. See my blog post on packing for Australia for more tips! I'm going to re-read it now…https://sydnijackson.wordpress.com/2014/10/04/packing-considerations-for-a-long-trip-overseas/

Bridesmaids it is! And red looks really beautiful on you.
And in addition to what jenny wrote, Le petit marseillais and Tesori d'Oriente are really good places to shop for lotions, shower gels and stuff like that. For our longer trips to italy in late summer/autumn time we only pack clothes which can be layerd easily,

Days ago, I was telling my husband about your trip to Italy and how I was jealous and wished we had the opportunity to do something like that. He was like, "What? You would hate that." He went on to bring up all the logistical issues of traveling overseas with small children and yeah, that brought me back to reality. So while you are going to be doing something so wonderful and fabulous, I can definitely see that it will have its headaches as well. More power to you!

I am from Pescara, in Abruzzo, a couple of hours away from Rome, and in late summer/early autumn I dress very light with dresses and blouses, layered with cardigans and cute little jackets for the "colder" night.
Where I live, right in the middle of the boot, the temperatures are usually very welcoming up until October, pack dresses and bring scarves and jackets in order to layer up when it's needed, but as you've been already told we have Zara and H&M and other big affordable clothes chains, plus here in Italy you might find very cute dresses and accessories in the local markets.

Pack layers and colours that coordinate so that you can mix and match. You'd be amazed at how many outfits you can make out of 2 maxi skirts, a pair of leggings, 5 v-neck tops, a few scarves, and some accessories. And as someone mentioned above, pack light and then pick up stuff as the need arises. A rule of thumb a lot of travel bloggers follow is to put everything you think you *need* on the bed, reduce it by half, and then reduce it by half again — depending on your packing habits, that could help you out! And have a fabulous time!

I can't even imagine how to pack for three months! Wow. 🙂
We'll be traveling through Tuscany in September for about ten days, I can hardly wait. Italy is definitely one of my favorite countries.
Years ago we drove from Naples to Sicily, the pictures are still up on the blog – if you need any more inspiration as where to go: http://heiratnichtausgeschlossen.blogspot.de/2010/01/italien.html
You will have a fabulous time in Italy!

I went on an exchange trip to Granada (Spain) last year for 4 months and only had 2 suitcases (in which I also had to fit bedsheets, a sleeping bag and towels).
Bring something like 2-3 or even 4 light dresses (which don't take much space), your favorite jeans (2-3 pairs), light t-shirts, tank tops and sweaters (you can layer them differently as the weather grows colder which makes for different outfits with the same clothes). And 2-3 really warm sweaters, your comfiest kind (and neutral in color so you can match them with different things). Also I was in love with long cardigans and stuff when I was in Granada because I could wear different t-shirts/tank tops underneath and still wear the same cardigan and no one even noticed it was the same 🙂
It's going to take some calculations and reflexion but you'll get there don't worry 🙂 And in the end the scenery and the exotic feel make you forget about outfits (or anyway that's how it was for me!)
Natalie says
My advice, less is always more when traveling! I've never regretted not bring a certain item but I have regretted having to lug around the seventh pair of shoes that I never even wear! Plus, you'll want to buy things locally. Aside from the essentials, don't worry. You'll be able to buy anything and everything you need if you forget or run out — and likely at a cheaper price. Yay!!! You're going to have the best time!
