the rules of the game are simple.
throw out songs and then what they remind you of.
i love songs and i love memory lane so put the two together and what do you have?!
throwback thursday: song edition!
baba o’reilly by the who: x-c races my junior year. i listened to this song before every single race. probably on a discman.
dave matthews band: high school through and through. and an ex, actually. i went to 14 concerts. definitely considered myself a groupie. dave didn’t know me, does he have to know me for me to be considered a groupie? my fave for a long time was jimi thing, but then later on it was rapunzel. and warehouse. oh don’t make me choose. there were many. oh and i was definitely guilty guilty guilty of AIM away messages being lyrics: “but it’s not the colors that matter, just that we all fade away.” god, that’s deep.
the whole sara evans ‘born to fly’ cd: dating steve. we both were listening to it a lot, but i was in nj and he was in ma (christmas break) and those songs bring me riiiiiight back. could not ask for more was our wedding song!
like i am and you from rascal flatts ‘melt’ album: making out with steve in cars. we logged a lot of time making out in cars.
fool in the rain by led zeppelin: i was just obsessed with this song and listened to it nonstop in middle school. funny fact: for a health course in 6th grade, we had to do a report on drugs and alcohol and read it aloud to the class. i talked about how “led zeppelin died of alcohol poisoning” and my friend john pointed out afterwards that it was actually not “led zeppelin” but the drummer. i was so embarrassed.
pat benetar: driving home from spring track. i got a ride home with this upperclassmen who i thought was so cool and she used to listen to pat benetar all the time. shadows of the night and we belong became a fast favorites. i was in looooove with shadows of the night for a good long while. in fact, i’d say it’s still an awesome song and i’m listening to it as we speak.
show me love by robyn: um, fourth grade? fifth grade? did any girl in the late 90s NOT listen go that song??
alright, i better wrap this up because i could go on… and on… and on.
will you share some of your own in the comments? i sort of love this stuff.
Unknown says
Oh man. "Could not ask for more" was our wedding song too. Except I first heard it as the Edwin McCain version. I love it.
Tisse says
soooo im playing blog catch up before i go to bed … which usually leads to no-comment-reading.. but this. this made me smile. and that means it requires a comment. and so…
third eye blind "motorcycle driveby" and "blinded" – driving way too fast on the way to high school in the morning… always running ridiculously late. always wanting the song to finish before i pulled into the parking lot.
the get up kids "dont worry ill catch you"- high school make out sessions with chris… specifically while parked in mcdonalds parking lots and random corn fields
oasis "wonderwall"- my first boyfriend… i was in 8th grade. (fun fact: he is now one of our best friends and even stood next to chris at our wedding)
guns and roses "knockin on heavens door"- caravan style road tripping to kentucky for family functions when I was in elementary school. the cousins would rotate cars at the rest stops to give the parents some breather time.
kim churchill "loving home"- birthing navi
alanis morissette "ironic"- fourth grade, driving to canada with my friend and her family to get chinese food for her birthday. i remember thinking they were the coolest.
i cant stop…
bridget says
wonderwall is the dreeeamiest. i love ryan adam's version, heard it?
ironic – oh gosh. that whole cd IS the 90s.
Tisse says
yeah ryan adams version is top notch as well…. so is his version of when the stars go blue. he's a boss.
aliburke says
This made me laugh, and I even got most of the references! Now I want to listen to all of these!
bridget says
i bet you would. now share some of yours, lad. i bet we have some we could share (OH YES. CELINE DION and Jake's howling!!)

I also was a huge DMB fan! Trippin' Billies always reminds me of summers after high school wreaking havoc with friends. Jack Johnson's In Between Dreams was the soundtrack to our love story when we fell in love. Our song has always been Better Together and it was really cool seeing him play at the Life Is Good festival last year with our kids in tow! Bonjovi You Give Love A Bad Name was my high school track anthem-needed some solid 80s rock to get through those middle distance races. Still miss that 600m sometimes…still don't at all! This is a fun post 🙂
bridget says
better together is suuuuch a good song. i love your list.
Corley May says
"Crazy" by DMB was "our song" my junior and senior year. My boyfriend and I were total nerds and I remember being way scandalized by the lyrics ("Lovely lady, Let me drink you please, I won't spill a drop I promise you" – OMG!). That song takes me straight back every time I hear it. LOVE this post 🙂
bridget says
hahahaha, love that. how about crash into me? "hike up your skirt a little more and show the world to me" — scandalous, dave.

Let me see…. I am 8 years older than you so this could be fun!
Pearl Jam – any freaking song because they are awesome and I listened to them all the time in high school.
Randy Travis – when I hear a song of his I immediately think of my Mr. Kell. He and I have a thing for older country music.
Big Head Todd – will always remind me of a summer trip to Montana. I can literally see myself and a my friend driving to our destination.
I could go on forever.
What a fun post.
bridget says
big head todd! since i have older sisters, i am totally familiar with big head todd.
Julie says
Ryan Adams 'Gold' album – first two years of medical school. Friend burned it, listened to it constantly in the car on the way to lecture.
No Doubt – high school. Driving a red Jetta with a stick shift, meeting friends at Grandy's for breakfast.
And Dreamweaver – with its high pitched whine parts – actually makes me sick to my stomach and I have to change the station if it comes on.
bridget says
dreamweaver makes me think of wayne's world. remember that scene?!
Kimberly says
TLC's Waterfalls, seventh grade riding the bus with my bestie Laine and eating gummy worms when the bus driver wasn't looking.
Gangster's Paradise, eighth grade riding the bus.
Aerosmith, Don't Wanna Miss a Thing, tenth grade, being in love with a stupid boy I hung out with all the time and wore his jacket, but was too scared to actually kiss.
And all things Dave Mathews remind me of the boy I loved my sophomore year of college because he listened to them and so I listened to them while I was home for the summer and just thought about him and his little Ford Escort.
This was fun!!
Alex Hubbard says
Guster reminds me of high school. Always. It was my first concert and I was such a huge fan. Ugh. Love it.
Kate Rogge says
ALL Garth Brooks songs from the 90s (Two of A Kind, Ireland, Friends in Low Places, etc.) remind me of carpooling to ballet classes. My Dad had a mixed cassette tape (!!!) of songs we recorded FROM THE RADIO back when that used to be a thing. I love this! It's made me want to get all my old CDs from my Mom's attic…
Tori Carlton says
Oh my goodness, my sister and I used to record songs from the radio on a cassette tape ALL of the time. Funny thing, we used to think that it was recording everything and so we would be super quiet thinking that if we talked it would be recorded onto the tape. HA, HA!
Shannon... says
My Eyes Adored You, Franki Valli – childhood
Any Menudo Song – 8th grade, hanginig out in my basement bedroom
Rapper's Delight, Sugar Hill Gang – hanging out in Boston with local teenagers while I was just a little bit too young 🙂

This is fun!

Now I remember again who inspired me to listen to Sara Evans, thanks for that! I really like the music related posts on you blog 🙂
Sarah Mclachlan "Push" – The song my husband sang at our wedding
Tracy Chapman "The Promise" – spending a year away from my husband and the kids, writing emails to each other like every hour filled with lyrics and cheesy quotes of how much we love and miss each other
Laura Pausini "Strani Amori" – Soundtrack to our engagment at Cinque Terre
Ben Howard "The Fire" – Giving birth to our daugther
Nancy Sinatra "You only live twice" – Graduation
Graffiti 6 "Free" – beach, summer, sunset, salt in the hair and on the lips
bridget says
this is a good list. (and engagement at cinque terre?!)

Ooh! I have two: The first one that comes to mind is Van Morisson's "Brown Eyed Girl." While waiting to see this play that was set in the 60's, the song Brown Eyed Girl came on. A boy in the 10th grade that I had a major crush on turned to me and started spontaneously singing it to me. Then he blurted out in utter disappointment, "oh, you don't even have brown eyes." For several years after, I repeatedly wished for my blue eyes to magically turn brown.
The second is Guns 'N Roses "Sweet Child 'O Mine". The first time my husband came to pick me up on a date, he pulled up in his ridiculous red sports car blaring that song. For some inexplicable reason, it was instant love. Totally irrational, but best decision I ever made:)
bridget says
oh the angst! wishing your eyes were brown! i can imagine myself feeling the same way.
sweet child o mine is the best. good decision 🙂

paul simon, rhythm of the saints: sophomore year dance parties 🙂

The timing of this could not be more perfect! I just re-discovered my 90's playlist on spotify and have been jamming at work. It brings back so many memories.
Come on over by Christina Aguilera- Dancing in our team locker room before volleyball games. Could also include Say my name by Destiny's Child and Ready To Run by the Dixie Chicks.
Any All-4-One or Boyz II Men- Reminds me of middle school dances and slow dancing with Cody Skinner. He was so dreamy. Still is 🙂
He Got Game by Public Enemy- It reminds me of my first date with a guy when we went to see the movie my freshman year of high school. I remember it came out in early May. Is it weird that that was 15 years ago and I still remember?
This is fun! Can we do it again sometime?
bridget says
come on over! yes!!
we can absolutely do it again. i have many more songs to share 🙂
Cynthia Butcher says

beautiful day- summer car rides with my best friend in high school and the u2 concert from a few years back
drive- late night car rides with my best friend
yeah- club days with college friends
bridget says
raising my hand. totally made mix tapes from the radio. goodness was that more time consuming than burning cds these days.
bridget says
always be my baby was the besssst too. i danced and sang to that song a time or two (or a hundred, for sure).
Catherine Short says
So many really, but Jack Johnson's Banana Pancakes always makes me laugh/cringe. The whole album was heavily rotated in high school and one particular rebellious/embarrassing evening involving yelling at my mother, not the greatest friends and said parents having to save me 😉 This song was playing in my friends car.
oh and aim messages! haha i always forget about those.
Caimbrin says
Oh man..
The Black Crowes- "Hard to Handle" Childhood
All hanson/spice girls- Middle School
Outcast-"I'm sorry Mrs. Jackson" Being a freshman and hanging out with the senior girls. I felt so rebellious. ha
Spice Girls- "If you wanna be my lover"- middle school
Coldyplay- "yellow" sitting on my best friends roof in high school talking about the boys we liked. "Landslide" also was a favorite at the time.
Journey- "Open Arms" our wedding song. We did the waltz…so funny
The songs of my life now are so random. Blake Shelton- "Redneck" (my daughters favorite song to dance to…why?) Imagine Dragons- "On top of the world" (My happy jam) Coolio- "Gansta's Paradise" (My, "bitch please" song)
Lara Graham says
LOVE THIS. Oh, the power of music…
Chicago. You're The Inspiration. Doing doughnuts (or is it donuts? I never know) in a snowy parking lot with my dad before he died.
Slow Club. Thinking, Drinking, Sinking Feeling. First roadtrip sans parents my senior year of high school with some girlfriends. Windows down, warm air blowing in, fields for days. Nothing but happiness.
And I think there are about 50 sappy love songs that are tied strongly to a few of my early boyfriends. But Etta James. At Last. That's all my husband. I overheard him listening to it at his dance studio one day with his boss and laughing about how he was going to choreograph a number to it for his ballroom team about his life (31 and not dating). We ended up dating, and eight months later we were married and used the song for our first dance.

Ice Cream by Sarah McLachlan. . .reminds me of sipping cappuccinos and writing poetry with my best friend Merry in high school 🙂

Dave Matthews lives in my neighborhood in Seattle. He doesn't know me either. Does that make me some sort of weird stalker or something? ha. I hope not 🙂
