yooooogurt. you may know that we hunts, we hunts like us some yogurt. my all-the-time stock is stonyfield plain whole milk. parker starts getting twitchy if the fridge is bare of that goodness. we add stuff to it–granola, fruit, sometimes a splash of oj. but sometimes it’s nice to grab and go. and when we’re out at a cafe and they’ve got those little refrigerated shelves right down at parker’s eye-level, you can bet he’s shoving yogurts in his pocket before i can say…. yogurt? so, sometimes the grab and go’s make it to our fridge for convenience. i am nooooot above convenience sometimes.

though, more often than not, they’re for william and lindsey. you see, they make their own lunches in the morning and are often just plain sick and tired of making themselves peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. i made my own lunch growing up most of the time (not all the time, mom! i know you did it sometimes!). and i remember getting soooooooo tired of making yet another peanut butter and jelly sandwich. that is supposed to sound really, really dramatic. so, i do understand their dislike for the terribly tedious task (alliteration!) that is peanut butter and jelly sandwich preparation. and so, i surprise them from time to time with a bunch of to-go yogurts (which brings me to this. have you seen it? it’s gold.) and they’re thrilled. a week’s worth of no peanut butter and jelly sandwich making?! hit the snooze button three more times this mornin’!
today we’re taste-testing the new yoplait greek yogurt against chobani. blueberry for both. and, you know we’re something of yogurt connoisseurs at this point. there should be a name for this!! anyway, as soon as parker saw the container: buh-buh!!! (blueberry, duh.) he was thrilled to be part of the official taste-off. as was william, steve, and i. lindsey was off at the movies with a friend and will be sorely disappointed to have missed this.
now it’s time to delve into all the dirty details (god, my alliteration is on fire today). perhaps more than you ever wanted to know about yogurt but… here we go. yoplait’s just hopped onto the fast-moving greek yogurt train and released their very own blended greek yogurt. yoplait’s is different from the others in that it blends it for you–so, unlike fage with the little separate container of sweet, or chobani’s “on the bottom” variety, yoplait’s done all the work (which brings me back to the ellen skit that i linked to above).
otherwise, thickness is about the same (and oh-so-thick. i love that about greek yogurt. though i do wish you could consistently find them in whole milk. it seems they’re most often 0% at my grocery store… these two were 0%.). yoplait’s got the thickness down, for sure. you know, where it almost doesn’t fall off your spoon if you were to tip it upside down? is it clear i love thick yogurt yet? and the blueberry taste… i gotta say that chobani’s blueberry tasted more… authentic? steve agreed with me. meanwhile william was busy finishing off two yoplait’s in about four seconds flat so he’d say that one was lip smackin’ good.
and another place where chobani trumps yoplait in my opinion is in sweetness. chobani’s is less sweet (15 g to yoplait’s 18 g though i promise i didn’t look until afterwards because i didn’t want that to sway me. i can be something of a sugar-hater. though, in the time it took me to write this post, i’ve snuck into the kitchen and sliced off not one but two small pieces of trader joe’s rockin’ chocolate fudge cake soooo when it suits me, i can embrace the sugar.) and, with chobani, you also have control over how sweet you want it by stirring more or less of the fruit on the bottom into the yogurt as opposed to yoplait’s already blended one. parker probably would’ve eaten all of them up if i’d have let him so we really can’t count on his vote going one way or another. as long as you give him some yogurt and buh-buhs, nobody gets hurt. had he been a little more articulate, we might’ve had a tie. but for now, chobani wins. by one. (sorry yoplait!)
if you skipped all the way to the bottom, then here’s the grand sum of it:
// chobani bonuses: more authentic blueberry taste (and a chunkier blueberry consistency if you like that sort of thing); ability to control sweetness because of fruit on the bottom
// yoplait bonuses: if you like it already mixed, this is your winner; sweeter than the other, for those who have more of a sweet tooth; the fruit is less chunky for those who like smoother yogurt
// they tie on thickness.
grand total:
(this is some complicated math so i’ll do it for you)
yoplait: 1 // chobani: 2
yoplait is pretty keen on this #tasteoff so much so that they’re actually willing to send both chobani’s and their own yogurt to you, ‘fo free (and it’s pretty easy to sign up too). get your “greek yogurt kit” here and decide for yourself.
this post is sponsored by yoplait. though, you’ll notice, all opinions are truly my own as i didn’t even pick yoplait as a winner. bam.

this is so cute. Love the taste test idea!
I've personally been obsessed with greek yogurt & honey lately. So good!!
bridget says
yes! i love that. i wrote a post about fage's once. it deserved its own post.

Thanks for head's up on the free yogurt, I'm always on the lookout for ways to get some greek yogurt for cheaper. I think my favorite is the faye 2% with honey on top…that's how I learned to eat it when I lived in Greece for a semester (and still dreaming of going back 7 years later!).
bridget says
all i read here is GREECE. i want to go and eat yogurt and honey on mykonos.
blm says
cute taste off. 🙂 i ate yoplait for a while when i didn't have a choice (very limited options overseas), but now that our grocery store carries chobani i ALWAYS pick it (or stonyfield plain). the taste of yoplait is good enough, but hate the artificial sweetener versions and the extra ingredients.
bridget says
i'm with ya.

My question: is the thickness of both owing to traditional method of straining to increase protein content? Or is either thickened with something like gelatin? More companies are starting to sell Greek yogurt that is thickened not by straining but by using additives. And a giveaway is to compare protein. Love the thickness but also live the non meat protein source…
bridget says
good question, ashley. i looked up chobani's and it looks like locust bean gum is the thickening agent they use… from the carob tree, right? i'm not too keen on a meat source either…
bridget says
just looked at yoplait's as well — gelatin free!

I have a lot of convictions about yogurt and I don't think I realized quite how strong they were until now. Anything less than 2% tastes like disappointment. The thicker the better, I say! Vanilla is preferable. And because sharing is caring, my favorites are Cabot 2% vanilla bean, Greek Gods (the name is as ridiculous as the yogurt is delicious) honey vanilla, and Mountain High original (read: full fat) vanilla.
bridget says
i have had that cabot one before and it is delicious! i don't think the other two are sold around me :- (but on that note, have you ever had wallaby??)
Kristi T. says
Greek Gods honey vanilla…oh hell yes. It's such a treat and great with oats overnight. Stupid question– Do Lindsey and William eat yogurt in place of a sandwich? I'm not asking because I'm concerned your starving your children, I just didn't realize that was a thing.
bridget says
haha, i'm not sure if it is a 'thing' but yes! sometimes they do–they'll still bring a piece of fruit and snack, but the yogurt is in place of the sandwich!
Cheryl says
Haven't heard of Wallaby but I'll have to check for it when I'm back in the States 🙂
Rebekah Daphne says
MOUNTAIN HIGH. The best. I love the full fat plain.

I'm an Oikos girl myself. Toasted coconut vanilla with fruit to dip? Yum! I also like their Key Lime & Orange Creamsicle.

My family loves us some Yogurt and though I have never tried the chobani, we LOVE the yoplait greek yougurt…..so delicious!!!

Great idea to get the kids in on the taste test. That would save me some heartache when they don't eat it.
Fage all the way! The best one is cinnamon orange that I smother in granola. It is such a weird combo.

I am a stonyfield greek with caramel at the bottom. Yummo!

Yay for yogurt! I prefer mine full fat. 6% or 7%. I think the taste is far better and more filling too! But I also read an article a while back about low fat, particularly low fat Greek yogurt. I'm sorry I can't remember where I read the article but it said that in order to make low fat yogurts thick they had to add filler (obviously) but they said some of the fillers used were really icky/terrible and not often labelled (this was about the Greek-style yogurts). I think it was grosser than just gelatin or guar gum. I know that they add weird stuff to make low fat milk palatable without labeling so it makes sense that they do so with yogurt. I recommend all fat/real yogurt, all the time for best taste and best nutrition!
Elena F says
Okay. Have you ever tried Wallaby Greek yogurt from Whole Foods? If no, you MUST try it. It's the best greek yogurt on the planet!
bridget says
yes and you're right. SO GOOD.
Alex Hubbard says
Iiiiinteresting. I'll give it a shot myself. I really like Wallaby, but I've recently been getting into coconut milk yogurt. Recommend givin' that stuff a try. Since, you know, you guys are yogurt connoisseurs and all 😉
Rachel says
I've been a chobani fan for a lonnnng time {pineapple or mango!}. I haven't strayed to far from that brand unless they don't have what I want. But lately I have been making my own "flavored" greek yogurt…..I take plain {chobani full fat!} greek and blend with frozen fruit. Then I put it back in the fridge and use that as my yogurt all week. It tastes very authentic and there is less added sugar 🙂
bridget says
love this idea rachel! (also freezing it–yogurt pops!)
Kimberly says
I too wish that whole milk yogurt was easier to find. My under weight babies seem to need all the fat they can get!!
peg says
ohmygosh, if you haven't already you have to try dannon oikos greek yogurt. I am also a greek yogurt connoisseur and it is hands down the best. Cabot is my second favorite, but I literally buy 7 of the grab-and-go dannon oikos in raspberry ever.single.week.

Well now I am craving yogurt…

We had such fun with our taste test and looks like you did too.

My favorite yogurt isn't Greek — it's Noosa Yoghurt, it's Australian-style and it's truly the best yogurt I've ever tasted. I am able to find it easily here in Arizona — my daughter has been able to get it in Ithaca, NY, it is worth the search!
