Here in the suburbs life can be pretty simple if you let it be. It depends on the stage of life, but sometimes that’s just what I crave and other times the march of a faster-paced life is really quite alluring. The winter time has its own challenges, particularly this one, one of our coldest in the last few years. I don’t think I’d give up the four seasons, each one so markedly different from the last, but ask me in February and an extended stay in southern California is looking pretty fantastic.
This weekend we had very few plans, were making very few plans. An impromptu take out dinner at friends down the street rounded out our Friday night. Saturday we went out for pizza (one half pepper and onion and the other spinach, feta, and broccoli). Parker’s suddenly turning a little bit pickier and had to remove all the toppings from his pizza which begs the question, why do we need the lights on so bright when we feed our children? Very, very dim kitchen lights are looking better all the time. Can’t be picky if you don’t know what you’re eating, right? The evening closed with a hot chocolate date, the hot chocolate the size of Parker’s head. Steve and I split it and told Parker it was coffee, yucky. He suspected otherwise. William and Lindsey both went to sleepovers. A successful weekend for them, indeed.
Sunday morning, I put on Jonsi (you know, the We Bought a Zoo soundtrack, all by them, is quite good), split a pomegranate with Parker, I made bacon, went to the grocery store. Cupboards were getting bare and it was necessary. I brought home apple sauce, promising to make apple sauce muffins with Parker after his nap. He’s such a determined fellow these days, understanding everything. “Help, Mama?” as he gets a chair from the kitchen table and slides it across the floor until it stops at the counter where we usually do our baking.
I can’t believe it’s already the end of January and I can’t believe it’s only the end of January. February, go easy on us.
I love weekends like that.
Off subject…what is the color of the wall in the top picture? We are moving into a new house in March and I am looking at grays and navy to fill my house with….
Yes do tell. I was thinking the same thing. It's lovely.
hi jodi and martha!
the top picture is classic brown by ben moore – a deep brown, i love it.
Sounds like a pretty darn awesome weekend to me, especially the hot chocolate & pomegranate part. Yum!
My girl has become picky lately, too, and it pretty much drives me nuts.
She insists on surviving on mac & cheese, broccoli and hot dogs.
Fun stuff. And actually, it kind of makes my life easy. So hey, I can't be too mad! =)
i actually just got a SAD lamp this year, because the winters were really starting to get to me… oye. need some happy-time. february is gonna be rough……
do not blame you. let me know how it works!
2 things:
1. Your couch looks so cozy! -jealous
2. Endless sunny days in SoCal can get quite tedious as well… we wish we had a bit of snow/rain right now, trust me.
Happy Monday to you!

This winter has been a rough one and as much as I love being at home, I hate it when we have winters like this one. I would easily forsake the four seasons for a change and chant daily to Andrew that we need to move.
that is ADORABLE that parker asks if you need help! ADORABLE!

Our life in the city is very similar. And, with this polar vortex crap we've had to be creative to keep the kids from killing one another. Love that Parker wanted to help bake, moments like that are so precious no matter their age. Oh, and We Bought a Zoo soundtrack (and movie) = lots of love in this family. I actually have a really personal post about the movie going up soon.
oh the sliding chair across the kitchen floor – our house too.
My little guy pulls the chair or stool to anywhere he wants to get. If I need to it to be safe from him, it has to go on the refrigerator! Your "Help Mamma?" story reminded me of that.
Ok–love your plant–what kind is it and did you buy the cool basket separate? Thanks! 😉
fiddle leaf fig – the basket was from homegoods/tjmaxx! sure thing 🙂
we remember that winter as the coldest of our childhoods. said jo.
January has been capital H hard this year. I'm with you. I hope February gives us a break.
Why do we need the lights on so bright, lol.
