1. blueberries for sal: robert mccloskey is the best and this is the sweetest story of both a child named sal and a little bear who go blueberry picking. they get their mothers mixed up but all ends well. “kerplink, kerplank, kerplunk!”
2. green eggs and ham: one of dr. seuss’ best, in my opinion. have you looked at the faces of the people on the train as it goes straight into the water? it never fails to make me laugh. they’re content and calm, as their train speeds downward. i’d recommend putting this on after you’ve done sufficient readings. it’s under ten minutes and fun to watch once the book is familiar.
do you have absolute musts in your house? though we have many, i’m still on the lookout for new books. one that’s in my cart now is the gruffalo’s child — after reading the gruffalo many times, i think it’d be fun to read this one. it’ll be under the tree christmas morning!
Amy Mongie says
After you've read The Gruffalo's Child a few times you must download this short animated film http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b018nrhm it's beautifully done ๐ x
bridget says
i saw that! already decided that we must watch it! thank you ๐

I'm going to pull this up the next time I'm at the library! Our library is awesome, but some weeks, I choose books that I end up not liking/Ryan doesn't like. Your list will help!
Go Dog Do by Dr. Seuss has been Ryan's favorite since last Christmas.
bridget says
there are so many junky books out there, aren't there??? i love recs too, so thanks for yours!
Betsy Gray says
I'm jealous that you have the first printing of Never Tease a Weasel, I prefer the illustrations in the original book to the newer version. If Parker likes that one, you should look for Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing or Old MacDonald Had an Apartment House (both by Judi Barrett), "There Are Rocks in My Socks!," Said the Ox to the Fox (Patricia Thomas) and nearly anything by Susan Lowell!
bridget says
oh i love these recommendations. i looooved cloudy with a chance of meatballs so i should try more by her!
and YES, i saw the change in never tease a weasel when i googled it – the old one is way better!
The Hoscheits says
thank you for this list as I am always looking for new books for my child. these look like some really good ones!
Janssen says
I am SO happy to see Blueberries for Sal on this list. I feel like so many people haven't even heard of it!
We love "It's a Tiger!" and "No Sleep for the Sheep." And as far as classics go, I love "Doctor DeSoto" and "More Tales for Amanda Pig."
Oh books. I could talk about them all day!
bridget says
we love blueberries for sal!! (and make way for ducklings too!) — steve will love that you just mentioned doctor desoto. it is one of his favorites. i will check out the others!
Denise says
For someone like me, who is often overwhelmed at the library (not knowing what books are good), this list is gold! I just added most of these to my library account (including every Bill Peet book they had). Can't wait to see how my 3 boys like them!
p.s. A few of our recent favorites are "Mr. Duck Means Business" by Tammi Sauer, "The Three Bully Goats" by Leslie Kimmelman and "My Lucky Day" by Keiko Kasza.
Rikki Rivera says
I seriously just LOVE these!

This is a wonderful list! A childhood favorite of mine, as any good Boston girl would say, is Make Way For Ducklings! My Grandy also used to read a book called Rain Makes Applesauce, it's completely out of print but I'm hoping it's hidden somewhere in her attic.
Bliss says
My kids most recent favorite is "I Ain't Gonna Paint No More." They have the rhyming words memorized and even though we've read it dozens of times, they are thrilled at every page turn. Parker would love it!
Chelsea says
Oh I am so glad you posted this! I love seeing what books other mamas love ๐
My 15 month old cannot get enough of being read to. He will also sit there forever (ok, forever in babyland time) and flip through books. I love sneaking a peek on him looking at his books with such concentration. So precious. XO
Devon says
Parker might like some of Richard Scarry's books. The little guy I used to nanny seemed to have very similar interests to Parker and he couldn't get enough of "What People Do All Day". You can look at that book a hundred times and still find something you haven't noticed on each page.
Devon says
There's another cute Richard Scarry book called "Cars and Trucks and Things That Go" that I'm guessing might be of interest to a 2 year old boy.
Gesci says
I love, love, love Blueberries for Sal!! One of my favorites ever!
Let's seeโฆ other favorite childhood books: Richard Scarry's Best Story Book Ever, Katy No-Pocket, When Small is Tall, The Mitten, Harry the Dirty Dog, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Harold and the Purple Crayon, all Shel Silverstein, all Dr. Seuss, The Story of Ferdinand, Danny and the Dinosaur, The Pokey Little Puppyโฆ
and I loved T.A. for Tots when I was little. And our book about Louis Pasteur, "Believing in Yourself", although it gave me a very convoluted idea of how medicine works.
My favorite-ever children's book (although older than Parkerโฆ more 6-8ish?) is The Lion and the Puppy, a collection of children's stories by Tolstoy (he was a huge advocate of education and started a school for the poor children in his area). Love that one, and I give it to most of my closest who are becoming parents. I LOVE it. It has a fair amount of sad, but I'm a realist. (Spoiler: the lion and puppy are friends!)
Gesci says
If it helps explain T.A. for Tots, I also grew up with "Free to Be… You and Me" as regular background music. And now I own the dvd. ๐
bridget says
LOVE these suggestions, girl. I'm a bit of a realist too, so I'll look into that Lion and the Puppy one.
Katy No Pocket and Harry the Dirty Dog are already two favorites!!
cynthia says
Oh Ferdinand! ๐ One of my favorites.
We have some of these already but adding new ones to my Amazon list. At 6 months my kiddo might have more books than toys but I am more than fine with that.

SO many good ones and a bunch have already been named. I discovered a fun one recently that I've gifted to my nephew and my man-friend's sons. All have approved! "Room on the Broom" about a nice witch! It's really cute, friendly, and rhymes! : )

we love the book 'giraffe's can't dance' and 'the bear snores on'. the rhyming provides a nice cadence when reading them over and over, too:)

Oh, I love this! Will be pinning to my library list board. ๐ Perfect timing with Christmas just around the corner, too! We have so many favorites in our household but here are a few that come to mind: Tumford the Terrible – a story about a loveable cat that has the hardest time saying I'm sorry. "Those words are just awful, he thought, I can't do it. They'd stick in his throat and he'd choke, he just knew it!" Love that one! Also, a super random find from a thrift store that we love none the less, Does Cheese Grow on Trees? A Book About Food – Kermit the Frog teaches readers all about where different types of food come from. Really educational and a fun read for the little ones. Eating the Alphabet – we've checked this one out from the library so many times. My daughter loves learning about all of the different fruits and veggies and gets so excited to point them out at the grocery store. Oooooh, artichokes, mama!! Needless to say, our own copy will be waiting for her under the Christmas tree this year. ๐ Thanks for the recommendations. Great suggestions in the comments, too!
