the three of us had the best day today. we headed to one of our favorite towns for breakfast (real purpose was to get the sewing machine serviced so lindsey and i can start using it!). and… old habits die hard… we didn’t spice up our routine with a new place (one day, one day!) but kept with our old standard: friendly toast. now, let me take a moment to talk about my breakfast. it deserves it (deserves its own post, i tell you what). it’s approximately seven hours later and i am still thinking about it. do you have those meals that you keep thinking about hours and days later? that’s how you know it’s good. (unfortunately, this was a special. THAT THEY SHOULD ADD TO THE MENU IMMEDIATELY.) okay, just listen. listen to this. it was three crispy tortillas. stacked. in between were the following layers of magic: black beans, jack cheese, and fresh tomatoes on one, corn salsa and jack cheese in the middle, and then on the top were creamy scrambled eggs, sour cream, and cilantro. hot damn, it was amazing. explosion in my mouth.
moving on. there is some major sand-moving-crane-bulldozer-truck-freighter action (you like that description?) going on down by the water and parker was enthralled. i mean enthralled. i might’ve even gotten teary eyed when a trucker smiled and honked just for him. who knew i’d find such pleasure in both learning the names of such machines and seeing him enjoy them so much. i’m a sap and it’s the best.
dude, portsmouth is really a fabulous town. this isn’t new, but i fall in love with it a little more any time i visit. steve and i even toyed with the idea of moving there. i so would. and the drive on 1a that takes you along the water is incredible too. it’s east coast’s version of the pch. bear with me. maybe a little less cool but we have more history so take that california!!
you guys are too, too cute. I so want to visit up your way soon (as in u.s-east-coast-way). one day when I do I will be hitting you up for best places to eat! that brekkie sounds delish.
Hi!
I love reading your blog!
I live in Wolfeboro, NH and have seen that you often visit there-gorgeous, isn't it?
I also love Portsmouth, it's a really cute town!
Keep up the blogging! -Lia
Awe, you made me miss home! I'm from Hampton Beach and that drive (that drive!) is one of my most favorites of all time. Also, I too know the names of so many pieces of construction equipment it's not funny. Boys!
"My Big Truck Book"= You need this. Here it is on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Big-Truck-Book-Board-Books/dp/1849154635/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362100246&sr=8-1&keywords=my+big+truck+book
@lisa, wolfeboro! we LOVE it there. winnipesaukee is one of our favorite places ever.
@because of jackie, oh yes! we drove right thru it!
@devon, totally looking it up. thank you 🙂
Nom nom the Friendly Toast!! Gimme.
So between my desperately missing England, my realization that Southern "winters" just don't cut it for me anymore, and my intense dislike of the West, I've been wishing more and more we could move to New England, and your blog isn't helping it.
But really, keep talking it up- because we'll at least visit up there (extensively, hopefully) and I can use your blog as a reference!
Omg, your family is too precious!!
yum! this all looks so delicious and fun!

The hubs and I talk about moving to Portsmouth all the time {he grew up in NH} and I really think that's where we will end up. It is quite wonderful and one of our favorite places to roam around in. Have you been to the flatbread pizza? If not go! You can thank me later!
Portsmouth is so fun! Have you tried Radici? Best brunch! They even have a Bloody Mary bar!
LOVE portsmouth. would move there in a minute (we live about an hour north, right by wolfeboro actually). and you're right about the drive – im from southern california and i almost love the "east coast pch" more than the real deal.
@rachel, yes! we love flatbread!
@liz, never tried it but i know just which restaurant you're talking about. will do!
@imatransplantfromca, i kind of love that you said that. california always beats us with the weather, but our 'pch' can rival theirs?! woohoo!
This breakfast place you speak of… I want to go to there! But the best is that picture of you and Parker. Framer for sure.
And I can't remember if I've asked before (or if you've posted about it and I've just missed it) but what sort of processing do you do on your photos? It reminds me of the VSCO cam app on iPhone but better somehow and I love it!
We love Portsmouth too! We live in Southern NH (over near Mt. Monadnock), but have considered moving to Portsmouth many times! There's nothing quite like the Friendly Toast and Breaking New Grounds! sigh.
These photos are fantastic! That brick wall is beautiful!

oh my golly we can see your teeth!! haha you should get over your fear and grin and bear it because you look so pretty with a lil bit of tooth showing gurrl.
I loved reading this- you can tell that you're a genuine writer, I can just imagine you telling the story exactly how you wrote it!
CALIFORNIA FOR LIFE.
jk. I am not one of those so-cal people.
ok i am a little.
but that breakfast..i want it in my mouth so bad right now.
Yeah, take that, California! haha!
Can we all just take a moment for that picture of Parket standing in front of the brick wall? I mean.
Your Portsmouth love was a good pick-me-up as I'm on the 6:20 bus from Ports to BOS and, seriously, why did we move out of Boston?? I'm currently going through this whole – I love Portsmouth (great town! our fam is here! we can have a house with a yard!) but is this really where I want to be? – thing. Seriously, Boston, why did you steal such a big piece of my heart that now a 1.5 hour bus ride seems so. far. away.
Um, sorry I just took over your comment space to vent about my inner conflicts on this Friday morning! 🙂
@lauren jean allece, thank you! all i did here was play with curves in PS. there are a million things to do with curves so that's pretty open ended – email me and i can explain better!
@amanda, that is rough. i'm sure there are days where the positives outweigh the negatives but commutes suck, that's for sure!
That breakfast sounds amazing! Loving the mix of your striped top with Parker' striped pants and his adorable mocassins.
Love Portsmouth! But, between your Instagram feed and your blog, my favorite thing these days is Parker's scrunchy face. It's way too cute!!
We've been meaning to try Friendly Toast but every time we decide to go out for breakfast we always decide to stick with our tride and true Allston Diner. Small but DELISH. You should check it out sometime 😉
PS And I've heard the wait is always ridiculous! Is that true???
@mrs. yellow ribbon, you've got to try it! and… maybe the wait is long on a weekend??? but we've been a few different thursdays and there's no wait at all! this is the portsmouth location, btw. maybe the cambridge one is different?
6th picture down. Killing me. That is quite the pose, Parker! 🙂
10 more days until daylight savings…
Love these pictures! Youre photography is getting more and more fantastic with each post. Love it!
@nicole, thanks girl! i'm practicing a lot… hope it is paying off!
Your photos are gorgeous, as per usual!

Haha, take that California. Also, let's get real Jay z's New York anthem totally trumps Katie Perry's California Girls.
Anyway, photos look lovely and I am dying over your breakfast description!
My husband and I stumbled across Portsmouth on our driving honeymoon 20+ years ago. I LOVED it, and would go back in a heartbeat.
Beautiful photos!
Gosh you guys are so cute! I have been wanting to got portsmouth soon. We live in Boston as well, its so fun to be close to so many fun things. And your breakfast sounds AMAZING. Yum!

can we talk about parker for a sec? that breakfast looks delish… but it's parker who looks edible!!
At least that seems like a reasonably easy recipe to re-create on a Sunday morning!

nicole 🙂
Bridget,
I just love Portsmouth too.
I grew up in the Boston area but have lived in LA for the past two years (my husband's fault) and the PCH, while beautiful, does not hold a candle to the 1a in my heart. We're moving back East the minute we can.
Happy weekend!
breakfast dates are the bombdiggity, no?! and parker? we are right there with you little man. when we're parked at a red light, we oooh and ahhh over big yellow construction zones full of burly workers and machines. never ever thought i would be interested in all that…but i have a 2-yr-old boy to thank.
I LOVE how he's posing in the picture by himself – future male fashion blogger!!
