main man steve has thursdays off. sometimes he does other stupid work on those days. sometimes he doesn’t. last thursday, parker and i managed to nab him for a few hours and head into boston. we’re glad we did. we had burgers at the paramount, walked the charles, headed into downtown crossing, went to an old book shop, met up with rachael, had coffee at bella vita, toured boston’s gorgeous athenaeum (thanks to rachael’s membership!), and then attempted (but sadly failed) to get cinnamon-sugar dusted fried parsnips at the clover food truck on the common. next time clover, next time.
are you from boston? have you been to boston? you like it here? (you hate it here?) i want some answers.
Elizabeth says
BELLA VITA. I loved that place. Did you get the Beacon Hill Delight? Because if you didn't, I'm not sure we can be friends anymore.
I'm going to bed jealous tonight.

That theatre is beautiful – how fun he has Thursdays off, it must be so nice to be able to visit all your favorite places as a family mid-week. Happy Monday!

I live in Boston (well, Brighton if we're being technical!) I have a love/hate relationship with it at the moment; I love the public garden & Beacon Hill this time of year, and biking along the esplanade. I hate T and not being able to escape the city on a whim (sans car, boo!)
Anna says
I have been to Boston once and I LOVED it. I was only there for about 5 days but I would love to go back for a more extended vacation.
Urban Nester says

Oh my goodness these pictures make me miss Boston so much! Boston is my favorite city. And every time I visit I have to go to the Paramount. I love that place! Have you ever gone for breakfast/brunch? I'm convinced they have the best omelets.
Laura & Adam says
lovely place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. I found the people there were not friendly (I'm from the midwest). However, I love downtown and CRAVE some cannoli from the Italian district!! You can't lose there 🙂
bridget says
@lyndsay, yes! egg sandwich AND pancakes once. soooo good.
@laura and Adam, aw man. promise there are some nice ones!

I love Boston through your eyes. Such great photos, Bridget. Beautiful.

i haven't been to many places in the States-so I can't say it is my 'favourite' place there-but I loved it. Loved the markets and the student feel, the green space and the way you can walk around the city so easily.

We love Boston! I always told my hubby that if we ever had (and I mean HAD) to leave Chicago that Boston would be next on my list.

Nessa @{Casa Braaflat} says
the one of you and parker is magic!
Amanda says
Next time stop at the Clover in Harvard Sq. and get a cup of coffee, its great. Also, check out my friend Jamie's restaurants – Toro and Coppa, they both do lunch/dinner and brunch on Sundays. I blogged about my most recent trip to Coppa here:

My only trip to Boston was for a wedding and the only thing I saw was that wedding. Well, and the side of the interstate b/c our cab driver didn't know where our hotel was, so he pulled over on the INTERSTATE to call someone for directions. It was a little frightening. But anyway, that's not really a good trip to Boston. I would love to go back and see it for real.
Kasha says
From the (very) Northshore!
I love me some Boston, but nothing beats the Northshore to come home to.
So jealous of your Athenaeum tour! And the first picture is just the cutest.
Ahn says
It's as if you're asking me to lust after Steve.

I love Boston – it was love at first sight when I visited a few years ago, and if I ever end up living in the US that would be where I would want to live. One of the reasons I started following your blog is that you're from this area and I love seeing the pics!
JM says
I'm from right outside of Boston and I currently live in Somerville. The Paramount is the greatest. I've never been to Bella Vita, but I'll be sure to check it out!
Alex says
I'm going to Boston for the first time in July, and am so excited!
Anna {dear friend} says
Well, you know how I feel about this city.
Can't get enough!
The Paramount is tops! And Bella Vita too (Natalie and I met up for coffee there just a short time ago– and Elizabeth! I got the Beacon Hill Delight! DReeeeaMY.) I think Beacon Hill is my absolute favorite. But I'll gladly take it all. GLADLY.
I loved your pic by the Charles. Such a beautiful day. And that last one of you and Parker by the Hatch Shell? Well, that might just be the best picture of all time. It's beyond precious.
Love all these photos, Bridget! They're so good!
Erica [pocket full of chuckles] says
i LOVE boston! i lived there for a short 3 months when i graduated college in 2008, but had visited monthly while in college. but the job market sucked so sadly i had to move away but i dream of going back one day!

i went to boston once for my 8th grade trip.
hopefully next time i go back, it'll be a different experience, since, ya know, i'm all grown up now.
but i am jealous of all the warm you guys have been having lately. maybe moving farther north wouldn't be a bad idea, after all…

I am from Boston! I live right outside Boston in Waltham. I love it here, even though Bostonians are mean and dirty (rubbish, wise)
Faneuil hall and tias are a summer must!

I'm dyyyying to see Boston. And aren't you dying to visit Vancouver? I propose a home-swap…that way we're both happy, right? 🙂 Loving your photos, Bridget. One day the hubby and I will get to Boston & experience all that wonderfulness!

@alisha, a home exchange is in order, methinks.

Dude, I live outside of Boston in Arlington. But my kids go to school on Beacon Hill right near Cheers. Even though I am in Boston EVERY DAY, I still marvel at it and love it. It is so gorgeous! I even love the grumpy people! The Paramount is great. Clover Food is great…just noticed a new one at Inman Sq. in addition to the Harvard one. And they have a good truck?! Will have to stop by.
I also lived on the No. Shore for 10 years, which has all its own magical delights (beaches, for one, and ice cream and fried seafood).
Great pics, Bridget!
Sarah says
I'm from Massachusetts (lived there until I was 14!) and I am the biggest Boston fan (both in terms of sports and just the general living conditions) around. We visited again last December and I remembered how much I LOVE that city – so jealous that you get to live there!
Becky [This Road Called Vida] says
I LOVE Boston! I've visited a few times and would live there in a heartbeat if given the opportunity. Those cinnamon sugar dusted parsnips sound SO mouth watering delicious. (sigh)
Kailee says
I will be living in Boston in less than a week! I'm going there this summer for an internship at Anthropologie and will be living with my aunt and uncle (in Framingham). Do you have any suggestions for great places that are must sees in the Boston area? I am SO excited!
alisha says
Done! Seriously. 🙂
bridget says
@kailee, how fun!! my friend elizabeth has a good guide from her days living here – check it out here: http://www.e-tells-tales.com/2010/03/elizabeths-guide-to-boston.html

I live in the Back Bay and try so so hard not to take it for granted. The Comm Ave mall is right outside my door and I do my best to marvel at it every day!
We are planning to move outside of the city in the next year or two so that we can have some green space (I'm trying to convince my husband that we need chickens) and access to a more reliable school system (lots of great public schools in Boston but it's a lottery system, so you can get stuck really easily). It makes me sad to think about leaving!
Emily Baker says
i love it here. i wouldn't live any other place 🙂

I went to college in Boston, and your post just made me miss it so much! Hopefully I'll get to go visit this summer!

LOVE Boston- my hubby and I went there to celebrate out one year wedding anniversay last April. I wish we could have went this year but I'm heading to Vegas this month for a close friend's wedding and money is tight! We'd love to live there, but our jobs are too good here in upstate NY…bummer!
Lucy Fitzgerald says
Looove Boston. I live in Somerville and probably will never live in the city proper again. Too noisy and too many students throwing up. It was fun in college though!
Love the clover food truck, now I work in Longwood and don't get downtown much so I miss their afternoon treats…apple fritters anyone???
charlieandlu says
I was in Boston when I was about 6 or 7 but I remember very little – most notably I remember the Make Way for Ducklings statues. 🙂 But this summer I am spending a month in Martha's Vineyard with the family I nanny for and I am hoping to explore Boston for a couple days while we are up there. Let me know some of your fav places there!
miss_patooty says
Boston is my favorite place. It's the only city that makes me feel homesick, and I tear up every time I leave. I've vacationed there in the winter and fall. I absolutely love it. I'm determined to live there by 30 (few years left), and pretty certain I'd never leave (I live in California). I miss getting DD (Starbucks sucks in my opinion). I need a chowdah fix like no other. I miss the Common, TD Garden.. I could go on, but I'm sure you already know of all the great things in Boston. 🙂

Boston just so happens to be my boyfriend – oh yes – boston takes me on beautiful adventure walks, dinner/lunch/breakie dates, spends full days with me at art museums, finds me new friends all over, buys me J.Crew whenever I want, takes me to red sox games on a moments notice, and protects me when I walk home at 2am. I never feel lonely in beantown. I love Boston and Boston loves me back. I can't wait to til me and the new hubby go to live – so i can have a steamy-city-love affair on top of an awesome marriage 😉

I live in Boston and these pictures reminded me of the most perfect Sunday morning I had last week – with a long, quiet run on the Charles, watching the cute Harvard boys row their hearts out, and taking a minute to enjoy beauty of this fabulous city. 🙂
