this fine-looking gentleman, my pop-pop, passed away friday night. he was 94 (or 93… no one is entirely positive of his age). he was totally hilarious and had spunk coming out his pores. he was so in love with this woman, my mom-mom, and talked about her constantly. they were married 65 years. she passed away soon after their 65th anniversary… about ten years ago. he’s missed her every day since. while we all mourn him terribly… i mean, its the passing of a generation and the last grandparent i had… i’d like to think they are having a seriously sweet reunion up there in heaven. probably eating some really fine food she’s prepared, maybe peach cobbler with warm vanilla pudding (one of her specialties!), and catching up on the last ten years. for that, i rejoice.
nevertheless, i’ll miss him till we meet again.
love you, pop-pop.

What a beautiful post. Thank you for sharing this family photo (I hope you have it framed and hanging somewhere in your house – WOW is it great) and the story of your grandparents. This is good stuff. I'm sorry that they are gone.

I like to think of that old hymn….'when we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be…when we all see Jesus, we'll sing and shout for victory.' Of course, those of us left on earth mourn for the passing of those gone before us, but just know, they are having a wonderful time in Heaven!
My prayers are with your family!

So sorry for your loss. It's never easy to lose someone you love, even though you know it is joyous for them to arrive home.
Also, what a beautiful picture! They both must have been very popular in their day. Love your blog!

I'm so sorry about your loss. This post made me realize that my grandfather is the last one of that generation in my family, also.
And I think this photo is so perfect. Says so much about the time.

This photo is amazing too. Gotta love a good boardwalk action shot.
Is this the same couple that's on your bookshelf?

I'm so sorry for your loss. I love that picture. What a gorgeous couple! My Grandma just passed away in February (the last of that generation also). I like what you said (& have thought the same myself) that even though those left behind are sad it's such a joyous reunion for those who are seeing each other again. I'm glad you can find comfort in that.
M. Flynn says
So sorry for your loss! Thank you for your positive and much healthier view of death than my own. I have recently lost so much faith in the idea of heaven, and I really needed to read your comforting view of their sweet reunion.
Alex says
I'm so sorry for your loss, but it looks like he lived a very full life. I'm so glad he had such a good life and that you were able to get to know him. Love to you and your family <3

Someone shared this with me at my aunt's passing this month and it just brought me a bit of peace. So sorry for your loss; even when we know it's for the best and there are reunions in the heavens, it's still quite sad for those of us still around.
And just at the moment
when someone at my side says,
"There she goes! "
there are other eyes watching her coming
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout
"Here she comes!"

I bet your pop pop is having an amazing time right now, like you said. It's so sad for us but ironically so great for the ones now living in a better place. I have to say, the first thing I thought when I saw the picture was "hey, that man looks like he's related to Bridget!" I can totally see it! May comfort and peace be with you and your family during this time.
Aspiring Kennedy says
oh, so sorry! i feel your pain. my grandmother has cancer right now, and as much as you know death is inevitable… it's hard to imagine losing someone when it's someone you know, someone you love.
i say, you make the peach cobbler recipe and share it with us. 🙂 it'll cheer you up to have a bowl… and it would make me love you. 😉 xo
