superbowl sunday? who cares! the big news is that parker tried his first food! i bought some avocados the other day and they were ripe for the eatin’ by sunday morning. alas, the time had come. this mama had to stop dragging her feet and let her baby grow up! a diet of breastmilk alone would not suffice forever (but, there’s a part of me that wants it to. don’t judge.). so, i cut an avocado in half, and mushed some of it up for my little man. did he like it? i’m not sure. he made some funny faces, mostly played with the spoon, and got maaaaybe a half a bite in. but, since i’ve heard lots of times that before one year food is mostly fun, i didn’t have high expectations.
and, by the way, gracie is totally delighted with the newest chapter in the life of parker.

My niece loves avocado! and mangoes. My sister told me that it can take up to 10 tries for them to like a food, crazy stuff!

Eek! This is so exciting! I bet Gracie will love him as he begins to try more and more foods!

My Baby Lulu is the same age as Parker and after reading the book Baby Led Weaning, we've been giving her slices of avocado (not mashed). She loves them! Very messy of course but lots of fun. She doesn't have teeth but can mash them with her gums.

I fed mine Butternut squash for his first food…but we worked up to avacado. And… mix it with applesauce and he'll eat the whole thing. I kid you not. Mine's almost 2 now and I can still get him to eat almost a whole avacado if I mix with applesauce.
wholesomebabyfood.com was a great resource for making your own baby food also. I made all of ours. SO much cheaper and healthier! And…the transition from baby food to real food is a BREEZE!

That was Zeke's first food too! He liked it more than banana! SO cute…

what a little stud! He's all, "yeah, I'm using a spoon. no big deal."
Totally not judging you on the whole wanting to breastfeed "forever." I'm only 2 months in, and already getting misty eyed about when these days will be long gone…sigh.

Hi Bridget, my mother-in-love showed me your blog, and I love reading. Thanks for sharing your (intimate and humorous) life with us!
Have you heard of Baby-Led-Weaning? We did it with Willa and have never mashed any foods. It's wonderful. You can type that phrase into google to see plenty of results. Best of luck with the newest dinner table buddy! I love this part. And how lucky to have an under the table vacuum cleaner (enter Gracie).
Cheers!

aw, so sweet! avocados must be the best first food. so yum.

I used to eat nothing but sweet potato flavored baby food when I was little. Apparently that's the ONLY kind I would eat. I don't think I was a very good eater when I was younger. However, my cousin's two year-old totally stole her dad's avocado sandwich the other day and ate, like, half of it. So, your kiddo may like avocado yet.

Is the mess that solid foods make not sliiiightly discouraging? I will admit that I'm a bit tired of it — especially given that my child hardly puts any of the food into her mouth!! Also, w/ E's new elimination diet she is pretty much surviving on breast milk alone at a whopping 13 months…so you might be able to hang onto that bond a while longer. 🙂 xoxo

Awwww! I loved that first feeding.
I mixed ms. ava's avocado with banana for a "bananacado" that she l-o-v-e-d.
So did my husband, just sayin'

Adorable! What kind of high chair is that? Are you liking it/is Parker? We're in the market for one soon and definitely don't want a big plastic thing covered in butterflies to cram into our condo!
bridget says
@tara, a keekaroo height right. I love it. Only downside: you need two hands to take the tray off!
Jamie @ charmingly ordinary says
Avo is good brain food, but I'm positive you knew that! It was one of Levi's first foods (take THAT, rice cereal!) and he still eats it many days a week. 🙂
