i’ve been listening to this song a lot – one of those i could listen all day types of songs – and it’s definitely not about a mother’s love for her son buuuuut it does have this line in it that strikes a chord every time i hear it: slow down, you’re moving too fast.
i still refer to parker as a baby. but i catch myself every time i say it and think, “you’re one of those moms, still referring to her no-longer-baby as a baby and that is sort of cheesy. accept it, he’s growing up.” cause man, he is growing up right before my very eyes. i thought the first year went so fast? the second might have gone even faster. i feel like the baby-ness was shed so quickly and i can’t even pinpoint when. there aren’t as many milestones from one to two, you know? crawling! first bite of food! first night of sleep! after one year of age, the months sort of blend together with fewer major markers but yet still such abrupt change. they go from learning to walk to running and climbing but when?
he’s almost two. whenever we’re out and he’s making eyes at strangers, they ask how old he is and are surprised when i tell them his age. he’s a tall fellow, that little buddy of mine, making it all the sillier that he’s called a baby by me. but those moments when he’s falling asleep on my lap, nursing like we’ve done a million times before, he’s still so little. sure, he takes up so much more of my lap then he used to, legs hanging over the arm rests when they once didn’t even reach, but he’s still so little and so fresh and so my little guy.
anyway, we’re creeping up on two. it’ll be here soon, sooner than i’d like. i’ve got no choice in the matter, none of us do. and while a part of it hurts a little bit, the other part celebrates how well i know him, how much he’s mine, how he’s not such a new part of the family anymore but really, he’s been here a good while at this point. and he’s so loved, man is he ever.

I could listen to Ray LaMontagne all day, every day. And I'm not a mama, but you know what I say? Call him baby all you want, for as long as you want. He'll be a "big kid" for much more of his life than he will be a baby, so wear that sweet name out :). He sure is precious. You guys are a sweet pair! Do you mind me asking where you got your skirt? I love it!
bridget says
all day every day amen.
baby for always forever.
skirt's from asos! i linked to it above 🙂

Love Ray LaMontagne. And that mini Beatles shirt is pretty amazing. I wonder if I could get one in pink for my mini…
I think it's completely acceptable for a mother to refer to her kid, no matter how old they are, as her baby. When my daughter is 24 I'll be that embarrassing mother still hugging and kissing on her. And I don't even have a problem admitting it 😉
bridget says
little ladies can wear black too!! 🙂 that gem came from h&m.
i'm the youngest of four and my mom still refers to me as baby of the family sometimes! as i near 30!!

Beautifully written, lovely photos too….my little boy is 7 but still very snuggly….and I've no idea how he got to be so big, it flies by 🙂
bridget says
that boy best stay snuggly!!
Pidg says
Oh Mama this was a sweetest pea post. I went through that. (ova and ovahh) and then finally I was okay with it. No, he's not a baby, neither are my kids but they're "my" babies and forever will be. I had a giggle the other day when I thought of calling my youngest who is 9 now "Lil Man" when he's 20. I'm sure I will and that's okay. Enjoy the growing the learning the new… (you and him both) you're not holding anything back or in denial he is simply what he is… your baby.
bridget says
pidg, i love your comments. i feel like you have a lot of wisdom since you've been at this longer than me. thank you, seriously.

Just Dont Tell Anyone says
hah! what a lovely boy he is ! and yeah, i know.. it does hurt a bit, when you realise that time flies, and they are growing up. seems just yesterday I was holding my little brother in my arms, and reading him some fairytales. and now he's preparing for school, running in a field and playing football. Still i call him my baby bug, but he always tells me that he's not a baby anymore 🙂 anyways, I always say that each period of age has its' beauty. there so much excitement to come with little Parker! 🙂
and as always – you look gorgeous! i wonder how you stay so fit! 🙂
bridget says
you're right, each age does have its beauty! that's a good reminder 🙂

Listening to this song and thinking about how babies grow up so fast is making my heart melt a little. You'll be so glad you have all these posts and pictures to look back on, and be able to remember these times that are blending together and going by so quickly. Your little boy is the sweetest!
bridget says
thank you kristina!! i love that this blog forces me to capture memories–complete with words and pictures. i journal too but it doesn't cut it!

Such great pictures and that Parker is way too cute! They sure do grow up fast but they will always be your "baby". Now that we have a new baby in the house (4 months) my 3 year old seems SO very old and big to me…it's crazy and sad all at the same time. When we are out or at events and she goes to play with the big kids it makes me happy and sad….sad that she's not right next to me the whole time like she used to be and me checking on her every minute and happy that she is at that stage that she can just be with the big kids and I don't have to worry so much. It's hard watching your "baby" grow up but so much fun too!
bridget says
i know… ya take the sweet with the bitter, right? and a belated congrats on your new bundle!
Emily Baker says
i adore little parker. such a wee nugget-lad!
bridget says
wee-nugged lad – LOL! 🙂
Leah says
being a mother is so bittersweet. it's beautiful to watch them grow, all while hoping they stop growing. he's adorable!
Whitney Harness says
Going through the same thing with my 'baby' – I expected motherhood to be hard but not in this heart-wrenching way. I've never felt so many conflicting emotions until I had my Riggs. It's so exciting to see them get a little bit bigger and learn new things, but so incredibly sad too. Parker is just so cute in these pics and I love your skirt and even with the iphone I love your pictures, as usual.
Anna D Kart says
Ohhhh I totally feel the same way… He will always be my 'baby' boy and nothing in the world shall change that…
I think for mother's it never changes – those little ones and when they grow up to be the big ones, they still want to hold and cherish them.

I still call my littlest boy "baby" and he's just turned five. Please don't tell me I have to stop! In fact I've told him he will always be my baby. And I also call my biggest boy "baby"; he's nine. Hmm. Maybe I do need to come up with something else. I'm visiting from Oh Dear Drea and loving your blog – lots of great posts.
bridget says
thanks for visiting, cj! and no! don't stop!

You're in my town! We love that playground 🙂 We moved here a year ago from Boston. Although we love the idea of raising a city kid… we are small town folks at heart. And I am a firm believer that our babies will be our babies forever! There will come a day when my three year old will tower over me… which won't be long (i'm only 5'2) and will be embarrassed by me… BUT he will always be my baby.
bridget says
no way!! i'm sure i'll run into you at some point!
(and yes to the always baby part!)
