i’m always so interested to hear what’s the latest and greatest on the beauty scene, and even more so if it’s natural and good for my skin and body. i know i’ve mentioned this before, but one of the best things i’ve done for my skin so far is drinking a lot of water. i feel like i notice it more the next morning. if i’ve hydrated the day before, my skin looks dewier, more full, smooth, even. that should be our first course of action!
10 things about Steve.
Steve in the hot seat for today’s post! He keeps things running smoothly over here at Tales of Me and the Husband, in a sort of unsung hero way. While he may not be shown as much, he’s behind the scenes all the time, so it’s fun to have a post all about him. Or at least I think so. You agree, Steve? Here’s ten things about him, in no particular order.
weekend links.
Since Steve came back from visiting his parents, we’ve been mostly ships passing in the night. I was at a HS back to school night, he had two late nights at work, so basically helloooo weekend! I plan on soaking you up. I think we’re going to start this documentary tonight with a glass of wine and pajamas.

Palo Santo, serenity now.
September, man. I promised a peach recipe on August 24th that still hasn’t come through, I showered once in a week’s time (not in a quest for the no-poo thing; this was unintentional), and, while on the topic, when was the last time the boys had a bath? Nevertheless, we’re creeping towards fall but having these glorious warm days that have brought us to the beach twice in the last week and I cannot complain about that. Hot September days are some of my very favorite of the summer. We’ve had a beautiful week so far.
A Big Thing on the To-Do List.
As a parent and homeowner, there’s about a million things on my to-do list in varying degrees of importance. From priming and painting the divots in the wall to getting kids’ physicals done so they’re eligible for fall sports to that oil change that’s so overdue that my engine might seize at any second (it happened to one of the kids!) to the never ending trips to the grocery store. You get it. Even as I check things off my to-do list, I realize that the list will never be complete. Some of these have been made a heck of a lot easier with things like the ability to email our doctor to make the appointment (for some reason, I’m so much better at this than I am at the phone call). Or, having your mechanic a five-minute walk away so there’s none of that driving two cars to leave one nonsense (it really is amazing; never thought “live walking distance to mechanic” would be part of my criteria for home-buying).
five things I’m loving right now.
no. 1 // the overdrive app. my friend kacia told me about it and i have no idea why i didn’t learn about this sooner. most of you have probably already heard about it, but if you haven’t: it’s an audiobook (or e-book) app that you sign into with your library and library card. then you can basically place holds on books and have them on your “shelf” to listen to for 21 days. it’s amazing! and freeeee. i’m listening to being mortal, and not that kind of girl. plus when breath becomes air was just added to my library!
no. 2 // this face polish. it’s expensive, but has a lot in it and i only use a really small amount about once, maybe twice a week. it’s so gritty that i feel like it really gets the dead skin off and gets into the pores. at least, that’s what i tell myself. and my skin is really smooth afterwards.
no. 3 // this one size fits all sweater for winter. i think we all need one. winter is coming. (who’s sick of that phrase?!)
no. 4 // ozark. i just finished it last night and it was really good but man did it get dark. if dark is not your thing, avoid. jason bateman is great in it. but it’s not his typical funny business, that’s for sure.
no. 5 // trader joe’s greeting cards. they’re $1! and they’re the prettiest greeting cards around. (i can’t bear to spend like $3.59 on a hallmark that i don’t even like.) i grab a stack every time i’m there.

Like so many of you, we went off to school with hearts on our hands. I wrote more about it all here. What a week it has been. I’ve also stopped nursing Anders (many of you are probably reading that like, “Huh? You were still nursing that child?!), and Steve’s father is quite sick. Emotions all around. And now, with week one behind us, I’m looking forward to easing into a routine and seeing signs of fall. (I mean, I guess. I do like leaves changing. But I could happily have another month of summer too.) What are you up to this weekend?

back to school shopping!
Well, now that we’re all saying sad farewells to summer (except you sweater-obsessed pumpkin-latte-drinking crazy summer-haters) and hello’s to the school year, it’s time for back to school shopping. We recently drove down to Assembly Row in Somerville for just that. I’m really loving this new wave shopping trend of outdoor shops in pretty spaces, and Assembly Row is no exception.
every last drop
I’m feeling like there’s that nuisance of a lump in the back of my throat right now. The one that’s going to hang out until you really release it with a good, deep cry. Summer’s unofficially over, and it was a great one. We capped it with a sunrise at the beach where we stayed put for almost 12 hours yesterday. The kids’ pink cheeks and bloodshot eyes, the sand that gathered around the outside of the tub after baths, the towels that are still hanging on our fence all hint at a day well spent even if it left us exhausted and grumpy the next day.
Parker starts kindergarten this week. How I’m in this place with that little one, I’ll never know. How grateful I am for the days I’ve spent with him within arm’s reach, nearly all of them since we first met. It feels like this is the end of a precious time. The most precious time. Kindergarten feels big. Like the beginning of the rest of his life in which he grows up and away and it’s natural and it’s good, but it hurts too. Oh to keep them little forever.
Thinking of all of you, going through transitions of your own this week. Let us meet again on the other side, in our new normals. We can do this.
weekend links.
We had a plan to go to the beach on Sunday, but it looks like it’ll be rained out. I’ll come up with something else for Labor Day weekend! What are you guys up to? Anyone traveling? Enjoy!
