Lying in bed tonight with Parker and Anders, the daily bedtime routine, and Parker says to me, “why doesn’t my shirt with the thumb holes, like the one you have with the thumb holes, have a pocket like yours?” “I don’t know buddy. That’s silly.” “Yeah, do they think kids don’t need pockets? Kids need pockets. Maybe more than big people need pockets.”
sweater weather!!!
The weather has now just begun to turn. Took longer than usual here in Massachusetts and while I’m not complaining, I’m also looking forward to pulling out the sweaters. Sweaters and jeans, jeans and sweaters, that’s about all I wear all winter long, so I think a few you really love, even if they’re at a bit of a higher price point, end up being well worth it. For me that’s the sweater down below. My purchases are normally more at the H&M price point, but this one will be worn over and over and over again.
halloween at our house.
Parker said to me recently, “Know what my favorite part of Halloween is? The decorations.” I don’t know if he was remembering that trick-or-treating was a part of the Halloween festivities but nevertheless, I loved his answer and loved the idea that I get to be a huge part in how he remembers his past when he’s an adult. Namely, the celebrations around holidays! (Is Halloween considered a holiday?)

This sweet boy and his habit of pulling my shirt up to sleep directly on my skin. Oh I love him. What are you guys up to? We’re up to Halloween parties! Two this weekend. Do I know what I’m going as? Nope. What are you going to be?

the fall colors and seeking joy.
The other day Steve and I, along with the two little ones, were driving to Costco. Black Eyed Peas “I Got a Feeling” came on and Steve said, “What ever happened to this song?!” It had been ages since we’d last listened to it. I was reminded of the giant flashmob that surprised Oprah during her final season to that song. What did she call it? Joy rising? It gave me chills just remembering it. We turned the song up as loud as we could and car-danced all the way there.

I shared this picture on IG the other day with a caption with the new Moms in mind who feel so vulnerable, so emotionally raw, and like they are gripping time by the neck so tightly that their fingers are turning blue. Is that you? Read it here. I was on a Parker’s first field trip at the time–a real one, where we took a bus and everything–and it was so strange, a little bit sad (didn’t I just bring him home from the hospital?), but mostly (truly) happy. Anyway, have a wonderful weekend, friends! It’s going to be a beautiful one here.

fall in the white mountains.
We did it! To the White Mountains we went! I forgot the carrier, and and ample snacks, but we saw some fall color and knocked another Northeastern hike off the bucket list. Last Sunday it rained, this Sunday might have been like 48 hours past peak, but it was beautiful nonetheless and the weather was perfect.
A post for George.
Steve lost his father on Friday. They live pretty far away (in Mexico) but he’d been able to get down there twice last month as his father’s health continued to decline. Besides going down there, he’d been calling at least twice a day for the last several weeks and, when his father’s health prevented him from doing much more than simply listening on the phone, Steve sang hymns to him night after night, hymn after hymn. I’d hear him from the living room in the evenings when I’d come down from putting the boys to bed and it was both heartbreaking and beautiful.
My father-in-law was one of the most tender men. Whenever we were together–admittedly not that often because of how far we lived from each other–he always made a point to so intentionally tell me how grateful he was that I was in Steven’s life. That Steven and the kids had found me after losing Shannon. He’d have tears in his eyes as he said this and be gripping both my upper arms as though his words would carry more weight that way. He gave great hugs. He’d always be the last one to go to bed, playing cards with Jordan, and often the first one up, coffee in hand. He retold a few of the funniest stories and it didn’t matter that you’d already heard them, because hearing him it again would include his laughter which was the best because he had the heartiest laugh. He’d been at his wife’s 16th (!!) birthday party and they were nearly inseparable until his death. A few weeks before he died, he cleared–for the first time ever–the pool table. He was a successful businessman and then, in his retirement, would go off-roading in a souped up Jeep in Colorado, or hunting with his friends. He was so generous. He had the sweetest smile. We’ll miss him a lot.
Steve’s birthday was earlier this month, and I never gave him his own post. It’s a bit strange to here, and a bit late too, but I will take a moment to say something about this wonderful man, which, on second thought, is perhaps fitting in a post about his father who had such influence on him. Watching him over the past several weeks love his father the way he did was really something special. He is full of integrity and tenderness, selflessness and sacrifice, and his love is an action. I’m grateful to be on the receiving end of it.
weekend links.
Weekend is here! I’m excited for it. I want to watch a movie tonight with the family (any family favorites that are free on Netflix or Prime right now??). And Sunday we’re hiking! I can’t wait. What are you guys up to?
