anyyyyway, on this beautiful necklace, a brief word: without getting too into it, i grew up as catholic as they come and said the our father hundreds of times in my life. that line, “thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” always stuck with me. on earth as it is in heaven. it has more meaning than that for me, but it just seems this is not the post to go digging into all of that. so, there you have it. (it wouldn’t all fit on the necklace, but i do get my point across nevertheless!)
The Fault In Our Stars. {And, (really small) spoiler alert!}
“In the last weeks, we’d been reduced to spending our time together in recollection, but that was not nothing: The pleasure of remembering had been taken from me, because there was no longer anyone to remember with. It felt like losing your co-rememberer meant losing the memory itself, as if the things we’d done were less real and important than they had been hours before.”
I’m writing this post with tears in my eyes because, well, I just finished The Fault in Our Stars. I took the book outside today, Saturday afternoon, it was way too cold, but the sun was out, the wind minimal, and with a giant fuzzy blanket and an Adirondack chair that sits on our lawn, I was able to read the rest in relative comfort (and, most importantly, quiet). And, God, it was so sad. I cried, and if I let myself, I could’ve turned it into a bit of a mess. I refrained, but then went to type the above quote, and began to cry again. I called Steve over to read it because, really, he’s the one I had in mind when I first read it.
I haven’t experienced any real awful hurt in my life. I’ve experienced some loss, but no tragic losses. No died-before-their-time sorts. I’ve lost my grandparents, the only two I’ve ever known, and I miss them, especially my grandfather as I knew him longer in my adult life–we just passed the year anniversary of his death–but… I don’t even really like to write it or think it because who wants to jinx themselves? But yeah, I’m lucky, I’m really, really lucky. I pray for the health of the people I love most on a daily basis, it’s all I can do, and while I can’t really say that means a thing because doesn’t everyone want, pray, hope, wish for the ones they love to live? And sometimes they don’t? No matter I do it anyway. I don’t know what else to do.
So, I thought of Steve when I read that because, while I haven’t experienced a great hurt, he has. And in some small (really small, no doubt) way, I’ve felt it a little bit too? Because one of the people I love most in this entire world has experienced one of the greatest hurts there is. You just don’t want that for someone you love, you don’t want that to be a part of their past, their history. But, nevertheless, sometimes it actually hurts me that he lost Shannon. I can’t imagine losing him and here that’s just what happened to him. Anyway, I remember him telling me this, when we would talk about Shannon and his grief. That without her, it was like their memories were lost. They’d met in college and they were married 14 years when she died. That is a lot of memories. And when she was gone, it was like they were gone too. I think about how often I have to ask Steve how something went, or where were we when, or did we go there? I can’t imagine being left as the sole memory-rememberer. It’s too much.
The book is really quite beautiful, albeit an easy read (hey, an easy read does not have to preclude a beautiful read!) and if you’re not afraid of a good cry at the end then do pick it up. You’ll probably end up thinking, like I did, that it’s got some of the wittiest and most charming characters. And that there’s no rhyme or reason to life sometimes. But, we keep praying, hoping, and wishing nevertheless, don’t we?

easter weekend in crappy iphone pictures!
the newest wendy’s sandwich is here, folks. read on!
so, you all knew this was coming, right? you might’ve already seen the trailer, or some of the mysterious instagrams and thought… #wendystastekitchen???? what is she doing there and why and what and huh? cause that is sort of what i thought when i first got this email. an email inviting me to taste-test a brand new wendy’s sandwich in columbus, ohio at the wendy’s headquarters? really?
my initial thoughts:
um… i don’t eat at wendy’s very often (not often, but i have and do–and, it’s delish–and remember this?). and i soooort of preach health food on my blog. plus, will i have the freedom to write about it however i see fit? basically, how is this gonna fly?
cause, let’s be honest, i like free things, i like food, i like trips… but sell-out, i am not.
so, we had a conference call. i told them my thoughts + concerns. the people (really, really cool people, by the way) i spoke with were like, “we get it.” in summation (and my own paraphrasing): we read your blog. we know you don’t eat out all the time. we know you like healthy meals but are still willing to indulge in quick food that might not meet the standards of the food you put on your table at home. we still want you to try it because wendy’s is really trying to push the envelope and get on the same level as your paneras and chipotles, and that’s pretty cool.
and i do hope we can all agree wendy’s is already a step above mcdonalds and burger king. please. (sorry mickey d’s and bk but, come on!)
plus, plus!! wendy’s has a drive-thru window. does panera or chipotle? (a few paneras maybe, but is there a such thing for chipotle? i don’t think so.) big mistake, chipotle, huge (said like julia roberts in that pretty woman scene)! big selling point, wendys, huge! and does your baby fall asleep in the car like mine does when you’re so hungry that you consider carefully tipping up the car seat to gather the stale droppings that might’ve fallen through the cracks over the last several weeks? no? so now, an option verging on healthy (and most definitely healthy by fast food standards) but also available at a drive-thru. enough said.
so, as they were saying in my summation/paraphrasing way: we want you to come here to the headquarters, see it for yourself, try the sandwich. we want you to tell us what you think–honestly–and write about it in your own blog voice however you would normally go about writing a blog post. oh, and a really legit film company (shout out to plan a!) is gonna film the whole thing.
say what????
this was crazy.
so, the real point of all of this fun brou-ha-ha.
the sandwich. and, if you’re a notorious post-skimmer, especially a wordy one such as this (i had to do this sandwich justice!), then at least read everything i’ve italicized for you below!
(the experience part comes in a later post – hold your breath! as i’m sure you will! – and, dude, it was crazy.)
oh, and i guess i should include one of those whole, “this trip was paid for by wendy’s, but these opinions are seriously my own because, well, they said to tell the truth” disclaimers. there you have it.
this sandwich was good. this sandwich was really good. is this sandwich going to change your life? no. (though, depending on how life-changing you find food, and how often you eat out, i’m going to change that no to a definite maybe.) but here’s what i will say. this sandwich WAS way more panera-ish (maybe even better) than it was fast food-ish. and i WILL order this sandwich again, like after i’m done writing this post. let’s break it down.
allow me talk about the bread. cause the bread is probably what excited me the most. here’s my beef with a lot of bread (no pun intended!). a lot of sandwiches are too bready for the filling they hold. you know what i am saying, i know you do. it ends up tasting dry or like you need to take a nap afterwards because too many carbs. this was a flatbread. it was thin and so right for the amount of filling. and! perhaps the best part. five grains in the bread: millet, flaxseed, sesame seed, rolled oats, and cracked wheat. do you really expect that when getting fast food? NO. i felt like the bread had an earthy taste, you could see the grains in it, and even a little crunch in your mouth. win, win, win. you go flatbread, you go!
and now the veggies. two big slices of tomatoes (red ones! not the white so-not-ready-to-be-picked ones!), and a big handful of fresh spring mix on that baby too. i am totally the girl eyeing my meager sandwich vegetables when out at fast food places like, “how wilty is that lettuce? how red and ripe are those tomatoes?” but this was good, people. (i know what you’re thinking. “bridget. of course it was. they prepped it perfectly for you guys. you were there to try it and write about it, girl.”) to that i say, touché! it’s true. i can’t speak for the sandwiches that you are all rushing out to try just as soon as you finish this blog post but i can speak for mine whose vegetables were total winners and say i hope (wendy’s! i’m talking to you!) that your sandwich is just as good as mine. and, for the most part, i feel like when i’ve eaten at wendy’s, i’m never terribly disappointed.
the sauce. first i should tell you we tried two sandwiches. one was called the asiago ranch flatbread grilled chicken (my favorite!) and the other was the smokey honey mustard flatbread grilled chicken. now, if you’re me, the sauce is pretty important…. enough of it so the sandwich isn’t dry, enough flavor so it… has flavor. well, there was a big ‘ol dollop of awesomesauce (had to!) underneath each chicken breast. and, this is pretty cool: the sauces have no msg!! no preservatives! ALL ingredients i can pronounce (seriously, i saw the list.) – things like garlic, honey, cheese, apple cider vinegar. i thought that was pretty cool because i’m an msg hater and thought i pretty much had to forsake my hatred for the stuff when i ate at a fast food restaurant. so, yeah, they were really good and i was really impressed both with the flavor and the ingredients.
finally, the meat. there was a good-sized chicken breast on each, sliced up, with the dressing underneath. and this chicken – farm raised and cage free!!! i, for one, assumed that all fast food chicken was factory raised (and i can’t speak for the other two big fast food chains) but that’s not the case here. isn’t that surprising? and great? so, while it’s not organic, it is the next best thing. also, the ranch version had… meat candy, my friends… in the form of bacon. a couple legit pieces of applewood smoked bacon that were not flimsy the way bacon can be. like, if you held it, it would be stiff as opposed to falling to make a sad downward u-shape. you get it. and apparently it’ll be cooked throughout the day in the restaurants, as opposed to some precooked mumbo-jumbo going on your sandwich. pluuuus, the sandwich itself will be made to order. so if you want them to hold things, add things, i was told that would be a-ok. also, on the ranch one, two slices of asiago cheese. so, to refresh: both sandwiches had chicken, spring mix, tomatoes and their own sauce. but the ranch one had cheese and bacon in addition. anndddd, bacon. thus, it wins.
so, in conclusion, i’m psyched about this because it was delicious and because it doesn’t have any seriously funky fast food chemical crap in it. so, vote with your wallet and show fast food places that we are interested in these sorts of changes. go getcha’ flatbread sandwich!
and hey, between now and 5/12, wendy’s is giving away $1000 PER DAY to someone who tweets @wendys with the hashtag #twEATfor1k. so do it! {official rules here}
now stay tuned for some more about this whole crazy thing in the coming days. and maybe a picture or two of the hunts eating this sandwich because you can bet your bottom dollar that we will. the kids have been asking about it and i’m all, “you’ll have to wait and see!!” so they’re basically ready to eat one or two or ten.
and please tell me if you decide to try it and what you think. i really hope you do.
{and p.s. if you try it, please get a picture of yourself in all your sandwich-eatin’ glory, however silly or not, and send it to me! itsahuntlife@gmail.com}
happy birthday lindsey!
