This weekend we’re doing a little bit of White Mountains exploring. We had a huge, very windy storm the other day so hopefully there’s still some color to be seen, but there’s plenty of it in town too! What are you doing?

Happy mid-October! We’ve got family coming into town this weekend for the long weekend. Looking forward to movies, and blankets, and togetherness. I’m making this, again (but with some shredded purple cabbage to top the bowls this time, and maybe roasted sweet potato). What are you doing? P.S. My above shoes are c/o Nisolo, one of my favorite brands for so many reasons (certified B-corp!).
When I look back at past Octobers, it seems there’s always a certain trudge to them. When you’re brushing elbows with your friends at the playground or at school pickup or in the grocery store and you’re in that heavy-hearted space, do you say so? “Hey, how are you?” “Shitty, actually. Totally shitty. Thanks for asking!” I think we’d all be better off if we took a page or two from Jim Carrey in Liar Liar. Maybe without the, “I hate your new haircut” honesty, though.
If there’s a friendly way to usher in a new season, it certainly seems that a stack of seasonally themed library books are a welcome way to do so. They sit on the shelves, oft-ignored the hot months of the year, or the new sprouting spring, and when the snow is piled high, but I imagine their glee as they see the librarian heading near, grabbing them out of their row to prop them on the coveted spot atop the bookcase where passersby grab them so readily. Holding their little book breath waiting to see if they’re the chosen one. I decided to get our own stack, perfect for the chilly afternoons, under a blanket, and maybe beside a cup of hot tea. Here they are.
…is the sweaters. That and these gingersnaps, anyway. Okay, and watching the leaves turn (but willing them to hang on tight to their branches longer than they inevitably do). Fall, such an angsty time. Change rolling in faster than my mind’s ready for it. Winter creeping its long, skinny, cold fingers into our backyards and staying far too long. Okay! Enough! Back to what I love about fall!
I saw this cake on Cup of Jo recently and made it and it really is so good and so easy. Will be making it many more times this season. It felt perfectly named too–the kind of thing that would be in a bakery in France. (Never been, but I feel like it’s true and that counts for everything right?). Anyway, what are you doing this weekend? We’re doing… yard work! And having a fire tonight. Looking forward to a cozy weekend (mostly) home.

Life insurance is an important topic, though a tricky one. Firstly, it’s end of life stuff we’re talking about. It’s not exactly a pleasant topic. Second, it can just be confusing. Where do I get it? How much do I need? How much does it cost? Do I really need it at all? I’m talking with online insurance agency Haven Life today to answer five of the most pressing questions on the topic of life insurance.
