After yesterday’s post, I started thinking about the it shoe of the last several seasons: the bootie, or short boot, call it what you will. They’re a standard these days, and there’s flat ones, heeled ones, suede and leather, pointy and round, laced or pull on, slouchy and stiff. I love nearly all of them, these Everlane ones being my latest love. I’m rounding up six more pairs, all a little different, but all fantastic. Check it out below.
The perfect outfit, with Everlane.
I won’t start this post with my observations about the weather or the leaves like I feel like I do a lot during the changing of seasons (I could, but I won’t). Instead I’ll talk about how Everlane’s basics are about the best basics around–for more reasons than one. So let’s do this.
Thoughts on a Thursday.
There’s a few trees that are still changing, and I love the way they all sort of take turns. “I’m up. <<a week goes by and leaves are down>> Okay, I’m done. Now you go,” so as to stretch their fantastic show right into late November. Of course, it makes raking a month-plus long activity too, but even as I spent around three hours doing it last Saturday, I thought, “totally worth it.” And it is. Fall is just spectacular. How many times have I written that and how many more times will I? No telling.
Memory lane: a random post
This wasn’t my plan this morning, this post, but when the spirit moves, sometimes you go where it leads. I’m also on my period, so there’s that. But, truth is, blogging used to be something a little less planned. I sat, put my fingers to the keys, and just went with it. So, this is a little bit of a throwback, in more ways than one. When you’ve been blogging for like 10 years, a throwback is a good check-in from time to time.
Notes for the Road.
It was touch and go for awhile with the weather, but it ended up being mid 60s and windy but no rain last night. The show must go on! And it did. We had such a good time trick or treating last night. I hope you did too. And I hope you find something to do with the candy real fast (besides having your kids eat it all!). We are going dancing this weekend, and I am so excited. A night of dancing with my husband is a night well spent.
Five things I’m loving right now.
01. these cords. i love the wide wale and the color so much. and this sweater. i’ve been wearing them a lot. they’re so fall, and the thick stitch on this sweater is my faaaavorite. ps. a fitting joke my friend just told… “did you hear about those corduroy pillows???” {pause} “they’re making headlines!”
02. this book. charlie mackesy’s illustrations are genuinely the most touching, the most moving illustrations i have ever seen. the tenderness and empathy shown in them is something we all crave and his sweep of the pen in illustrating the animals and their accompanying dialogue somehow captures it so incredibly well. how does he do it? what a gift that man’s work is to all of us.
03. this slouchy hat. i just love them this time of year. plus, perfect for those bad hair days.
04. this organization. we just got their catalog the other day and the boys really liked looking through it and thinking about some animals they might want to support. it had some great information too, especially for a kid like parker who just loves learning about animals.
05. this entire line of ethical clothing. it has been popping up an ad in all my feeds for months and i love every single piece.
The Beal House, Arethusa Falls, and a quick trip to the White Mountains in October.
October has been a wash of yellows, some reds, the smell of damp wood and leaves, and sun streaming into the windows in the morning, casting such warmth in my living room that I can’t help but sing praises to this complicated beautiful life we all live. I’m a deep feeler, and October’s rapid changes bring them all out.
Notes for the Road.
One of my dear friends shared this in a text message recently. I just loved it, and wanted to share it with you guys too. Have a wonderful weekend.
Some weekend reading…
Controversy around a new Netflix movie (which only makes me more curious).
Throwing a dinner party like a Vermonter. I think this is more spring/summer themed, but fun to dream.
Second hand clothing predicted to overtake fast fashion. Good news!
Pumpkin latte, at home (and with a whole lot less shitty ingredients than the Starbucks PSL). Yes please.
The shoe that’s sitting in my cart tempting me right now.
The Crown Trailer!!! I am going to miss Claire Foy so much (genuinely one of the most talented actresses I’ve ever seen), but Olivia Coleman! Helena Bonham Carter! This is one of the best shows ever. Steve and I love watching it together.
The magic blowdryer is on sale!
Eight kids at one school diagnosed with cancer. This is so awful. And a cell phone tower potentially to blame (I’m not convinced it’s not). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, could we just pump the brakes a little here?!?
Crock pot chicken enchilada soup, yes please.
I love these National Park Field Notes books.
I keep eyeing this skirt.
I love this charming little spot in the kitchen.
The next cookbook on hold for me at the library! (Thanks to another reader suggestion!)
If you’re an Aldi fan, you might enjoy these tweets.
And that’s all for now! See you next week.
Cookbooks from the library! And other foodie reads.
There is nothing that holds more sweet (or savory) promise than that of opening a new cookbook. What joys there are to be found! What meditative cutting and dicing and gentle stirring you will do directed by its pages. What jazzy playlists will stream through the kitchen, dancing through the delicious steamy scents of onions and garlic (there’s no better scent than those; wait, newborn baby breath.). And if you know this joy, than you also know the disappointment when you open one with such high hopes to find maybe one, maybe two recipes that will take a coveted spot in the line-up. You know those cookbooks. And so I say, no more! No more purchasing cookbooks before thoroughly vetting them lest they take up a dusty spot on the shelves. In that vein, here’s my favorite revolutionary-to-me tip…
Chasing fall + other thoughts from Woodstock.
I have crispy leaves in various places all over my house, a mottled red and green one on the island next to the candle, a few in my right jacket pocket, a whole branch stuck in a shot glass of water next to the soap dish. Fall gifts from the boys. After a storm, we wondered if the green leaves on the fallen branch would continue turning if the branch was no longer on the tree. Turns out, they do not. Meanwhile, our back deck is still scattered with seashells from the summer’s bounty, and sticks and rocks from all over New England are always around.
