i chose this picture cause this should really be called the jef + sean show (+ emily too). arie, out of the way! and chris, well, we already know you’re kneeling at your emily shrine at home now.
alright. hometowns. i’ve been watching this show long enough to know that that word is grossly overused and never referred to as ‘hometown date’ and, if it is, you get five extra points in my book.
ricki reunion!
she used, ‘safe… taken care of… good heart’ to describe sean and while i do still think he’s pretty boring, i am gonna say that those are good qualities in a husband. so, go sean.
chicago. chris’ hometown (DATE).
+ ‘i’m just hangin’… staring at buildings… being a bobblehead in chicago.’
+ very, very, very, very happy. i wrote this down but can’t remember why except that he must’ve said very too many times.
+ from 1 to polish, we’re polish. ice age made a funny!
+ i’m not an ice age fan. we already know this. but, mama’s boys are good boys in my experience (except when they’re like SUCH mama’s boys that they can’t even stand up to mama. that’s no good.)
+ chris is crazy, emphasis on the crazy.
+ ‘future daughter in law’ – woah boy!
+ rose (ice age’s mom) said ass! rose! you minx!
+ she said she loves me to my dad! (did that really happen? i wrote it down but now that i know the outcome i’m confused…)
+ “you make me feel good. crazy good.” again, EMPHASIS ON THE CRAZY.
utah. jef’s hometown.
+ um. jef has a friggin’ awesome enormous ranch that he’s never mentioned? #WINNING. pick him immediately.
+ i get such good vibes from jef. normal, funny, self-deprecating…
+ this thing is DONE if she’s not a good shooter. again, i like jef. making light of the whole thang.
+ lemonade. utah. lots of siblings. parents on a mission. ok… to my mormon friends, jef’s definitely mormon right? and second, is it totally cool that he’s potentially marrying a non-mormon? (seriously, can someone answer these things for me?)
+ the ricki stuff in his letter. shut the front door. that was sweet and with all emily’s been through, was probably music to her ears. i mean, obviously she needs to have a major connection with the guy, but she’s also seriously looking for someone who’ll love ricki. plus eighteen-hundred for jef.
+ emily’s an idiot if she lets him go. part of me isn’t sure he’s the one FOR HER but still, JEF IS MY WINNER. and that’s what really counts (of course).
scottsdale. arie’s hometown.
+ face grab. i’m calling him that from now on.
+ ‘i wouldn’t trust anyone but arie in the racecar.’ um, yes you would. another race car driver.
+ talking in dutch around her. weird.
+ mom’s hard to read for sure.
+ she said arie’s funny? JEF IS SO MUCH FUNNIER.
+ arie does nothing for me.
+ arie’s dad: “emily is hot, has a southern accent, i’m into her.”
+ arie says he’s going to marry her with such confidence. don’t count yo’ chickens before they hatch, face grab!
dallas. sean’s hometown.
+ i want kensington cottage for myself.
+ i couldve sworn that his niece yelled “daddy!” as she ran to him. that’d be the most dramatic EVER IN BACHELOR HISTORY if that was revealed.
+ um, the ‘i still live at home’ stunt was a little weird. and SUCH fakery going on! emily in interviews: SHATTERED EVERYTHING I BELIEVED ABOUT SEAN. emily to sean: I CAN CLEAN! didn’t dig that.
+ sean’s dad is my favorite person in tonight’s episode. besides jef.
+ i wanna hug sean’s dad. that man is salt of the earth right there.
+ prague dejavu. sean running down streets yelling emily.
rose ceremony.
+ emily’s hair is a little beauty queen but really pretty.
+ i like how she’s putting herself in their shoes and getting emo about the fact that the families are involved now…
+ first rose handed out. ice age: WHY WASN’T I FIRST. second rose: I’M GONNA KILL SOMEBODY.
+ i think chris’ questions to her upon exit were legit. but i just don’t like his tone with her.
+ emily made him a ‘believer’ again. i mean, true love and heartache exist before 25 yes, but come on, how scarred can you be already.
next week.
CARRIBEAN, EMILY LOVES MANY MEN, LOTS OF JUMPING OFF SHIPS.
goodbye face grab. jef’s my fave. sean might be better for her. still, jef equals win. you?

We missed the first part of this episode, so this recap was for real.
And I gave you a hard time about being late with this post. Shameful!
Anyway, when Chris was bitchin' in the limo home, Mike was all, "If this was my son, I'd kick him in the ass and tell him to act right on national TV."
I think I'm still team Sean, although that kid's face is super red and his jokes were kind of lame. But she licks her teeth a lot, so they're even.
tricia says
I should really learn not to read your recaps while at work. My guffaw of laughter at the "first rose handed out. ice age: WHY WASN'T I FIRST. second rose: I'M GONNA KILL SOMEBODY" caused lots of curious glances. Oops. 😉
This is SO EXACTLY right.
Jamie says
I'm dying to have the Jef mormon thing answered, too. I'm pretty certain he's mormon, but can he marry Emily without her converting?!
Also, I'm with you – good riddance Ice Age, hopefully Ari's next and I like Jef best, but I think she'd be better off with Sean, just because he seems more her speed. But Jef is my fav by far!
Ugh and Ari seems so slimy and his family was not warm/fuzzy at all!
And, Sean's dad was the best!
So, basically I totally agree with everything you said in case that wasn't clear. I'll stop now 🙂
Alli says
I thought Sean's niece yelled "daddy" too!! I was gonna be like "what?!" I think the whole joke they played on her was just to lighten the mood. But it was still a "huh?" moment.
As much as I hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure she chooses Arie. I would much rather her choose Sean though. He seems good for her and definitely ready to step into the father roll. Who knows though! I guess we'll see in a couple of weeks.
Elisabeth @ La Vita e Bella says
okay to answer the jef mormon thing: his family is definitely mormon – his parents are serving as mission presidents hence they weren't there. Jef hasn't really gone to church/ been active in the mormon church (for almost a decade from what i'm told) – so while someone might have wanted to warn her to wear little more clothing yesterday (at least she wasn't meeting old fashioned parents) – i think his family is genuinely happy if he is marrying a girl family oriented girl.
so yeah – his family is mormon, he grew up mormon but isn't practicing anymore 🙂
hope that answers your question!
ps. and he's awesome. i met him last week and he's way cool . and way more attractive in person.
Erika says
Hey! Your token Mormon here! 🙂
Anyway–I know for a fact Jef grew up Mormon (my friend went on a Mission with him!)…But, I don't think he is practicing anymore (Just guessing because he drinks wine and other alcohol on dates)…His family still does though.
I know plenty of Mormons who marry people who aren't Mormon. It's totally okay–You just can't get married in the Temple (learn more about Temples here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x_-TQivCx8)
Hope that helps!

yes i caught up on it all over the weekend. like watched every episode in a row. so now i feel like i can join in the fun haha.
chris…meh. happy hes finally gone!
i cannot stand sean with a passion. like can't watch him. he makes me cringe!!!!!! so hope she doesnt pick him!!
i like arie. and i would be happy if she picked him, but i love jef so much! i agree though, i dunno if they are perfectly right together – but i still love them together!
i guessed he was morman too, but heres more info http://www.patheos.com/blogs/frenchrevolution/2012/06/26/jef-from-the-bachelorette-im-not-a-practicing-mormon/ apparently hes half morman!
Kaileigh says
Was it just me or were all of these hometown dates terribly boring.
How awkward when Arie's family started speaking dutch. Ya he stopped it, but he didn't stop it quick enough. Ruuuuude.
Have you read Sean's sister's blog? shullfamily.blogspot.com It seems like he is really close with his family and his niece and nephew. It makes me love him.
april millar says
I think Jef's family is Mormon but I don't think Jef is. At least there have been a few things he has done that make me think he's not a practicing Mormon.
But even if he was he could choose to marry Emily in a civil ceremony.
If he wanted to get married in an LDS temple then he picked the absolute wrong place to find love (which is another reason why I think he isn't Mormon) at that point yes, she would need to be Mormon.
Kami says
I just have to laugh because I have honestly never watched an episode of The Bachelor/Bachelorette, but I absolutely LOVE your updates! Almost makes me want to tune in … 🙂
Laura says
I heard that daddy thing and thought that was the shocker they teased. And i gagged about his room, that wasn't his room.
Team Jef!
Megan says
Jef has totally won me over…i would pick him (because its about me). Agree, still dont feel like him and em fit though…its just not believable for me…but i love him and his personality so much. oh and the ranch helps…
i love sean. omg his fam was my fav. I want his dad to be my dad.
Arie has fizzled so much for me. I was really feeling strong for him in the beginning but now im like, bleh. over you and your family.
SO GLAD ice age face is gone. gag.
starbiesandsangrias.com says
Team Sean all the way, although Jef's ranch makes me think twice. I am totally over Arie and his fam too. Boring.
starbiesandsangrias.com says

Melissa says
Also, mormons can date non-mormons!
WhitMc says
Jef is my hands down favorite, and I am glad people are clearing up the Mormon confusion. It does seem strange he would go on the Bachlorette if he were a practicing Mormon. That is one elaborate conversion attempt if I ever saw one.
Arie gives me the serious heebies. And it was just so awkward with his parents and speaking in Dutch, WOW. I love how he is like "They are SO European." Yet they live in Arizona?
Sean is cute if a bit generic. That joke had me almost peeing my pants, I was totally fooled. Then when I realized it was a joke, it was almost more awakward than if it were true. But I want to put his dad in my pocket. Maybe Sean's dad can just become Jef's dad and all will be right with the world.
yours truly says
Oh man, LOVE LOVE LOVE Jef! I have this feeling she's going to pick Arie, but I think she's such an idiot if she doesn't pick Jef or Sean. Actually I think she should pick Sean's dad! What a stud. Nicest guy ever. I almost think Sean seems too perfect. Jef is a little more real I feel.
communikate. says
Rad ranch eh? Jef grew up in my hometown of St.George, Utah. I hung out with his older brother, Steve here and there in our college years. He's a nice kid, and seems to be from a very nice and generous family. As for the mormon bit, from what I've gathered he's just not practicing right but his family still is.
susanne evangelista says
First of all, I've never watched bachelorette before last week. I caught up on the last few episodes and I'm sucked in.
Jef. Marry him all the way. He's fun and REAL. She acts the most natural with him. Like, she isn't having to put on her "polite southern" airs.
I think she just wants Arie for his hotness. The end.
Sean is pretty boring to me. He's super nice and all, but boring. I feel like they could be bro & sister. Not feeling the chemistry. And his running after her yelling "Emily" again… please. Been there, done that. But his dad! So great!
k8te says
i am totally Team Jef…Jef for the win! I don't mind Sean …but totally agree the "i still live here" stunt was weird, and the chasing down her car thing? ehhh, over the top. Jef is totally funny, and adorable. And Sean's face is REALLY red…just ruddy? In one shot it looked normal, then RED in the next! I cheered when Chris went home, and secretly hoped for more drama from him being dismissed (does that make me a jerk? oops!)
kaylan says
sean seems like the most natural fit, maybe because they are both southern? emily seems to like over the top glitz and that cottage was the definition of over the top (super cute though!).
i've been over arie for a while, and this just confirmed it. his family isn't what she's looking for and it was just all kinds of awkward. also, not seeing the "arie is soooo hot".
i. love. jef. the ranch just sealed the deal. and i love that emily pretended to be all confused with the gun and then totally surprised him. i wonder if she knew his family was mormon? i would have chosen a more modest dress in that situation, just out of respect.
chris – the "i'm more of a man than any of them" thing really proved that he's not. it was the final nail in the coffin of i don't like him. have more grace and dignity if you're so freaking awesome.
i'm firmly on team jef with one f. he's a great guy.
caitlyn says
I love this recap. I do love Sean, and sometimes he can be really akward, but I think he's just really bad at being on TV
E says
ALL OF YOUR READERS KNOW JEF.
sara says
dude. jef was killing me last night. ordinarily i cringe when anyone on that show writes something then proceeds to read it aloud. it's almost too mortifying for me to watch at that point. like i want to change the channel momentarily because i can't handle it. but jef was so sweet and cute about it. i couldn't even deal. if she doesn't pick him she's crazy.
arie has slid down in the rankings for me, too. he's alright but with jef in the running it's no contest.
sean bugs. the living-at-home joke was so dumb and contrived. duh. i mean, they seem to jive but again, compared to jef he's a snooze.
and chris. bye bye, buddy.
oh this friggin' show!
Lexilooo says
I hope she picks Sean, he's definitely the best for her, I think!
Anna says
I didn't read the other comment so I don't know if anyone already said this. I am mormon and he most defnitely comes from a mormon family. I have some friends that kind of know him and I am pretty sure he isn't active in the church anymore. So form that point he can marry whoever he wants.
emily says
I went to high school with jef 🙂 we were buddies. ha. yes his family is mormon, but i am not sure if he still identifies as mormon. either way it's totally cool if he married her. at least with me!
glad you're also on the jef boat.
Courtney says
Girl, Ari's face grabs are killing me! It's like he's aiming to consume her face. Jef, one F, is hands down my favorite. He asks the best questions and their conversation seems the most genuine. My favorite part of the episode was listening to Emily interact with her daughter. Those two "sweet girls" are precious.
bridget says
um, you all know jef. can i get an invite to his ranch please?
Stacy says
haha, not only do we all seem to know Jef with one f, but he was also recently seen at a blogger meet up here in Provo, UT and every Provo blogger that went there was talking about it (pictures found here: http://justinhackworth.photoshelter.com/gallery/Soel-Mingle-password-soel/G0000.t.zIsyWaFA/3/1). It was a hot topic for a couple of days.
Magdalena's Madrid says
Just caught up on the last two episodes and am in total agreement with you. Ice age was strange, very strange and Jef and Sean are by far the best.
Jenni Austria Germany says
okay…so, i think we all know that chris' nationality and i have a history, and….can i just say i support emily in her decision to run, run, run far away? ….jk (but not….)
okay, i have a major bone to pick with jef. or maybe abc. what was UP with the whole "talking about being mormon is taboo" thing. why say "my parents are in south carolina doing….charity work". your parents are on a MISSION. your parents are MISSIONARIES. every time his siblings said "i just don't know if she has the same, you know, VALUES as our family" it pissed me off so much. i honestly want to know why they couldn't (or wouldn't) just say the word "mormon". of course, the letter about ricki might have nullified all that b.s. for me, though.
the sitting in arie's living room while every one talks about her in another language? i've been in that position so many times. it sucks. (well, not arie's living room, but you get it.)
kensington cottage was awesome. it even had a/c. and she TOTALLY yelled "Daddy!" when she ran up to him! my friend and i commented on that too! and then re-watched it! i was so excited for him to be a secret daddy. but then, he wasn't. disappointment.
and i agree: legit post-rose-ceremony questions, scary tone.
Heidi says
Arie's family was creepy…and rude. He should have shut down the Dutch talk immediately!! Sean's family is soooo perfect, but so is she so I think they are perfect for each other!! Jef is real cute with her and she would get along great with his family and all those kids for Ricki to play with!! Sean or Jef…please send Arie home!!
Abi says
Why is Arie still even here? Ugh he drives me crazy. I'm still team Sean…he's great, but his parents are great too and that'd be awesome for Emily and Ricki.
Kels @ K and K Test Kitchen says
Still Team Jef! Or Team Sean. But sadly I feel like it comes down to Arie in the end.
And of all three, he is the one who least seems ready to be a dad. He should have recruited some kids to come over and hang out for his hometown. I could just imagine Emily looking around at all of Jef's nieces and nephews thinking about how Ricki would have cousins to play with or thinking about how much Ricki would love hanging out with her cousin Kensington in her awesome cottage. But hanging out with Arie's mom would totally frighten me if I was Ricki.
K says
Monday night I was watching and seriously wondering about this Mormon question. So glad I logged on and found all the answers – love that so many of your readers have met one F!
Also pretty sure I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for it to be revealed that Sean had a Luke Dane's-esque skeleton in his closet 😉
And yeah, face grab can go anytime know. Puppets and poetry are winning the day!
ps. Have you checked out the recaps on EW? Hilarious commentary like your own!
Kylie says
Okay, we totally thought all the same things on this entire episode. LOVED Sean's dad. What a sweetheart. But I'm totally Team Jef for the win.
Also, the Mormon question was probably already answered–I didn't read the comments–but if not, Jef is Mormon, but he has been inactive in the church for the past several years. I have friends who know him in Salt Lake and they said that his entire family is still active, but he isn't, and his parents are currently serving as Mission Presidents in South Carolina. I go to school in Utah and I have my fingers eternally crossed that I will somehow run into him somewhere.
Anyways, enough fangirling over Jef. Loved your commentary!
libby says
My boyfriend was raised LDS but no longer practices…although his family still does. First episode… Jef walks up and Salt Lake City flashes across the bottom of the screen my boyfriend says, "he's Mormon" When he first mentioned his parents wouldn't be there and then when they were on the floor in the library and he started asking questions about living together before marriage and kids, sealed the deal for me.
@Jenni I also think it's bizarre that it hasn't been mentioned on the show. You would think Emily must know the deal. From my observation though (and I'm kinda in the same boat as Emily in terms of dating a non-Mormon who's family is all Mormon) I think it's much more than a religion. It's a lifestyle.
@Bridget- in terms of marrying a non-Mormon, to my knowledge there's no rule that stops it although I feel like his parents obviously hoped he would marry within the religion. At the end of the day I'm sure they just want their son to be happy. Marriage to a non-Mormon to Jef I'm sure isn't a big deal considering he's made the choice to become inactive.
And about warning her to wear more clothing, I don't think it's necessary. If she's going to end up with Jef, his family should be accepting of who she truly is. She wears short shorts and tank tops, they don't. She drinks, they don't. As long as she goes about it in a respectful way, I think she should be able to stay true to herself.
Libby says
okay when Sean had his niece on his lap and he was like "……i have something to tell you" i shouted out "OMG he was the sperm donor for his brothers children!!!!!!!!!!"…well i was wrong haha. living at home + stuffed animals + a cookie = so stupid and fake. I like Jef but I dont know about the whole mormon thing, I like arie but his family was creepy..i couldnt deal with that, I thought ice age was hot but damn did he have a temper at the end!! and sean..I like sean the best! I cant decide who will be final two for the life of me!!
Laura says
Ok, love that you do these! (I had to save it till I watched it on TIVO and have to avoid all mentions of it till I watch it haha) So def Jef is morman, I dont know why they avoid mentioning it on the show (they did an obvious voice over when he said his parents were gone to (cant remember which state) on a *voiced over* charity trip…) why cant they say mission, or that they are morman but hint at it? I also want to know the answer to how he feels not marrying a morman, though his brother say that "jef is the black sheep of the family, and a lil more wild" so I wonder if that means he is not practicing. FYI I am not morman so I am not the best judge but I grew up in Idaho (more mormans per capita then Utah, and all my friends were) I fell in love with Jef on the last episode and even more on the hometown, loved the jokester side of him, and LOVED the letter, points points points!
Chris needed to go, with you on the creeper status… though his dad and mom were sweet.
Aries mom was sketch, and I kinda think that your spouses family isnt everything but I think it is a big factor, they are involved in your life from then on, you better like them… and they were rude, talking in dutch when you first meet her?! Didnt see a bond with her and them.
I like Sean, he has been my fav for quite awhile because he seems real, like he isnt putting on a show for the cameras, or trying too hard, or playing the game. He is a guys guy without over doing it. I did not like the living at home thing either, it was weird, I am not a fan of jokes that go that far… also agree with you on the fact that she in the interview was "oooo hell no!" then to his face and his family all cutsi about it, ummm no be honest, I woulda… I was freaking out at first because I knew I woulda dumped a grown man living at home "by choice" deal breaker! Glad it wasnt true! His dad, cutest thing ever! I love him, and I think that is a good sign that his dad is that marvelous dont you?!
Alice says
I fell in love with Sean's dad. Everyone else can go now. I kid, I kid. But he was so sweet. I love his soft little voice.
I also love Jef. He is so fun and that letter was so sweet.
Face grab – that is hilarious. I speak no Dutch and it made me feel like I was getting a pedicure because those bitches are always talking in their foreign language and making fun of my toes. I know it. They are just small, not weird.
I would have punched Ice Age in the face for speaking in that tone to me. He is dumb!
Do they do a men tell all thing like they do for the women? I don't remember.
Can't wait to see more of Sean with his shirt off. Lovely!
Alice says
Geez, all of your readers do KNOW Jef! Not fair. Maybe the not mentioning Mormon thing or missions thing is a Jef decision, not an ABC one. Since he isn't practicing it right now. You never know!
A Sunday Kind Of Love says
hahahahaha @Libby I *thought* the exact same thing about him being the sperm donor/dad! (I was at the gym so I couldn't scream it!)
also, Bridget, I love that you have this series. I've never seen the Bachelorette until this week at the gym and I had all the same questions, esp. about Jef being mormon/dating her. Jef is my fave– but from this one episode I've seen, I'm not crazy about Emily, so I don't want them to end up together 😉 hehehe
-Lindsay
p.s. sean's "joke" was wayyyyy too much. I was like "uh, what is wrong with these people? and when is he going to reveal that his "niece" is his daughter?!"
Bennulz says
man.
I have been Team Arie from the get go.
BUt this week…
uh…
that family was so weird!
I really did NOT see her fitting in there!
So, I'm down to Jef and Sean. But I'm really leaning toward Sean. Jef is funny and cute, but Sean seems more realistic for Emily.
That joke with him stil living at home. He says " I wish my Mom had picked up a little" . I was like RUN GILR RUUUUNN!!
Damn. I loved Arie 🙁
Bennulz says
forgive my above typos – I have a glass of wine when I watch 🙂
in my opinion, the rose ceremony at this point is just mean! The person being eliminated should be just pulled to the side and told. This waiting to NOT be given a rose is torture!
Carissa Jackson says
hahaha OMG your Chris "Emphasis on crazy" comment had me cracking up. I'm SO torn between Jef and Sean. Here is my logic.
Jef- SWEETEST LETTER EVER! I think I teared up. Hormonal? Maybe but I still teared up. The comments about Ricki were perfect. He seems to carefree and go with the flow type of guy. He's always making Emily laugh… POINTS.
Sean- BY FAR HAS THE BEST FAMILY! I almost want to say she's going to pick Sean over Jef. Did anyone notice that not a single family mentioned Ricki on their own except this family?! The parents telling emily to come back soon and to bring Ricki- SWEET! What a great family! But Sean doesn't seem 100% invested? No big I love you gesture (until next episode). I SWEAR IT BETTER BE A GOOD I LOVE YOU FOR WAITING THIS LONG TO SHOW FEELINGS. sorry for the all caps. ha.
Ok this is my little input 🙂
